This Heart of Mine (I Pledge) Lyrics

I lie awake watching your shoulders
move so softly as you breathe
With every breath you're growing older,
but that is fine if you're with me

I pledge to wake you with a smile
I pledge to hold you when you cry
I pledge to love you ‘till I die
‘Till I die

The morning light plays on your eyelids
A sleeping beauty dressed in sun

I will wake you with a smile
I will hold you when you cry
I will love you ‘till I die
‘Till I die
‘Till I die

I believe this heart of mine when it tells my eyes
that this is beauty
I believe this heart of mine when it tells my mind
that this is reason
I believe this heart of mine when it cries at time
that this is forever
I believe this heart of mine when it tells the skies
that this is the face of God

I lie awake watching your shoulders

His own words: This is simply a love song that I wrote to my wife, in this concept it represents the belief and the strength in words and rituals, in faith. Some of the themes recur later in the concept to remind us of this vow and how fragile human faith can be sometimes.

One of my fav songs from this amazing album. The part where he yells "God" is amazing. Its also obviously about Daniel and his wife getting married.

Reminds me of Genesis.

I have no idea why I said this four years ago. It doesn't remind me of Genesis at all.

@Aniland the vocals perhaps? and the piano melody (in the background)?

Although it is very obvious this is a song of love, and in fact Daniel said he had written it in honour of his wife, I cannot avoid interpreting it a little differently... Whenever I hear this song I think of it as a song being sung by the Blessed Virgin with the Child Jesus in her arms, almost like a lullaby: can you picture it? The Lady in her little house -built by the good Joseph himself, who knows-, the golden sun entering through the windows, the Child perfectly satisfied sleeping in His mother's arms, all the house silent -we don't want to wake the little one up- but it is a silence full of life, radiant, strong, beautiful, and true. And she watches Him silently, and then she sings...

...for that Child is Beauty Himself, Reason Himself -the Logos of God-, the Eternal One... His face is truly the face of God. She saw that Face every day, growing older and wiser "before God and men" (cf. Lc II:52), but only to her He was her little Child: "I will hold you when you cry... I will love you till I die".

And you and me, both hidden behind the door, would like to shout the same promise... and we tell him, very quietly -we don't want to wake Him up-: "I, too, will love you till I die".

I understand that it was written for his wife, but I deeply resonate with the lyrics too.

I decided to marry my wife watching her "shoulders" as she slept ... I knew in that moment that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her, I wanted to grow old with her etc. So Daniel's lyrics reflect very truly to me what love is, and how you know you love someone ... very poetic, and I couldn't have said it better.
