Good Morning Joan Lyrics
good morning joan
now pick up your phone
it was bad but just a dream
and you are remembered
put on something pretty
go back to the city
in town the sky's just space
no starlight in your face
listen to eve, she's got stuff up her sleeve
to her there's no excuse
you've gotta use before you get used
or talk to louise
she knows all about freezing
she got lost in early may
and now it's december
i'd call on you if i could
if you were less like me i would
good morning joan
did you wake up alone
did you dream you woke up happy
with a phonebook full of names
just forget about mary
she says everything's scary
she got locked inside her skin
get near her, she'll drag you in
i'd call on you if i could
if you were less like me i would
save you from this if i could
if i were less like you, god knows i would (save you from this)
spare us all this shit
but you're all just like me so i quit!
my name is yours
can i sleep on your floor
see, my heroes changed their minds
and i lost my numbers
now pick up your phone
it was bad but just a dream
and you are remembered
put on something pretty
go back to the city
in town the sky's just space
no starlight in your face
listen to eve, she's got stuff up her sleeve
to her there's no excuse

I love this song to death! Sometimes, it's THE very description of my life.
i love this song... but i dont understand it actually.. in the first place who is she singing to? a friend? can anybody help?
I'm pretty sure this is about her various problems, represented by various people. The fact that she refers to them from an observer point of view probably means she's taking a step back and analyzing herself from a neutral stand point and she's probably talking her way through the steps to a resolution. Of course, judging by 'but you're all just like me so i quit!', she decides to give up. Probably because she now has a new perspective which is what may be implied by 'see, my heroes changed their minds', and also by 'and i lost my numbers'. It probably means she no longer has any interest in these things she once cared about because she now sees the pain and confusion isn't worth it.
What a fantastic song that is basically the story of my life.
I think this song holds a connection with Joan of Arc and Eve from the Bible, Joan lead a whole army when she was 19 years old, was very courageous, and died on the end her head was taken off, but even though she died she lead them to victory, I think that she would call on her if she could because she searches for answers and needs courage in some parts of her life, but because of both of their stubborness she wills against it. Then she says that she wishes that she could change the world, and persuade God to not have punished the world for Eve eating the apple, 'God knows I would save you from all this shit!', but then she states that people are all the same so she quites, we all have sin and we deserve the punishment, maby I've got it hectically wrong but thats what I poicked up
I agree... they all have a significant name, eve - the desiver (she's got tricks up her sleve), Joan of arch - the young (unstabile) courage (the one that needs guidance), marry - the virgin (she's been locked inside her skin).... all parts of a female - but i can't figure out who the heck louise is.... any surgestions

I think she may be referrng to Louise of Savoy. I think there is a story about her which says that she got chilled/a cold whilst watching a comet, which she believed was a sign from god, that she was about to die. She died 3 days later of black death.

Not sure tho - but that'd make a little sense at least.

Its been bugging me to death trying to figure out who the Louise is. I mean obviously she references many woman in history and the bible, but I don't know who the Louise is. Perhaps I will read into the Louise of Savoy that Firen mentioned. Thank you Firen!

I think this song is about a woman who has reactive attachment disorder and fears keeping close friends, so she pushes everyone that gets close to her away. This is why her phonebook is empty. I met someone who never lets anyone get close to her, because then they can't leave and hurt her. She had a very difficult childhood with her dad abandoning her family when she was 5. Eventually she pushed me away when we got too close. She has learned to forget her feelings for others on a dime as a defense mechanism so that they can't leave her first like so many people have in the past.
If you are in a situation that touches on reactive attachment disorder, a good movie to help you understand what might be going on is Good Will Hunting.
Another good song from The Cardigans that touches on this topic is "Don't Blame Your Daughter" which talks about the situation between a fatherless daughter and the father that abandoned her. Many people with reactive attachment disorder grew up fatherless, neglected, or in between foster homes.
