Elizabeth, You Were Born to Play That Part Lyrics

For you I'd do anything
Tear myself in two
Just to hear you breathe

Calculate the changes that in time
Turn to nothing and then multiply
Yourself by my pain

Over you is where I stnad
I wish I knew why
But I don't understand

I'm waiting on someone that just won't show
And every night it seems like there's no tomorrow
Not that you will ever know

Wherever you are, I hope you're happy now
I'm caught in a dream and I can't get out
I'm caught in a dream
I'm caught in an endless dream

Wherever you are, I hope you're happy now
I'm caught in a dream and I can't get out
I'm caught in an endless dream
And I'm not strong enough to let you go

And I have tried everything
But that
Elizabeth

It's about one of Ryan's close friends who lost a child that was about to be born, who had already been named. According to Ryan, his friend never recovered from it.

That's what he said at a live performance in June of last year.

Hi, the show is from Charleston SC and the date was 10/06/2005 and it is on the LMA for anyone who wants to download a copy. All because of the generosity of Mr Ryan Adams. :-) A Beautiful song from one of the greatest Songwriters/Performers that is around today IMO.

I think what makes this song so powerful is that yeah, he wrote this for a friend about her stillborn baby, but it could just as easily be about a failed relationship. The lyrics are ambiguous enough so that all you get, really, is the feeling of some sort of love - any sort of love - having prematurely died before it really had a chance to grow. You have descriptions of calculations and planning and expecting something great and not being able to let go of the fact that you just don't really have what you thought you would.

I see it as the equivalent of "The Shadowlands" on the new album.

Is it dedicated to Beth Orton?
