Maya [direct quote]: "I wrote that because when I was at school that was the type of shit that you have to learn first when you're an immigrant and you get sent to a special school to learn English. And I was always pronouncing everything really badly because the way you say it in Tamil is totally different. I mean, the syllables, the way they come out your mouth is so different: ba-na-na. And that's how that came about. I just wanted to make [the album] quite autobiographical."

To add to what she's said. I think it's also about how you are treated in places like Britain if your mother tongue isn't English. It also goes to show how the system is so fucked cause knowing English equals to being educated !

Stupidity about something, that's for sure. You'd have to research a bit on the band to really know for sure.

Great song.

Oh, wait. I've never noticed the second line of the song, Refugee education number one.

Maybe they're trying to educate (rehabilitate?) drug addicts? You know, the ones who drugged themselves a bit too far out of their minds =)

Possibly not, though. Just a thougt.

Seems like commentary on English as a Second Language instruction for refugees. Repeating words like "banana" is sometimes done to help learn pronunciation, but M.I.A.'s comment at the end ("get yourself an education") seems sarcastic in the context.
