Your Misfortune Lyrics

When your faith in life is gone
Come and speak to me
When you're down and all messed up
Seek my sympathy

When everybody says no, no, no
Well it's
Your misfortune and none of my own
Wrong, wrong, wrong
Well it's your misfortune that sweetens my song

I can be the friend you want
I can be your confidante
I can be the right reminder at the right time
Throwing out the lifeline

When your face is caked with mud
Come and speak to me
When the chill creeps in your blood
Seek my sympathy

I can be the air you drink
Every single thought you think
I can be the right notion in the meantime
Warm you like the sunshine

Stand in the light. Stand in the light. Stand in the light.

What an amazing song with amazing feeling. He seems to just want to make this person happy, encourage them like a true friend/love. It is also incredibly beautiful. Everyone could use someone like this.

Actually, as far as I know, Mike Doughty doesn't believe in any particular religion. The song seems to fit God well. It could also be about someone who wants to help their friend.

Yeah I don't find this to be about god at all. It seems like he's speaking to someone he's close to, but who isn't as close to him as he would like. The girl who runs off with other guys, but always comes running back to him, and he's reassuring her that she can count on him to be there, even when everyone else isn't. There's nothing specific in the song to back that up, but that's just how I feel about it.

I feel like the song kinda references that everyone has the same feelings and problems. "It's your misfortune that sweetens my song" to me means that everyone kinda gets that feeling, which is what makes the writing so profound to some people.

it's about God. And I usually never find the references to God in songs, I'm always surprised to find out an artist is a Christian artist... but this song is about hope and faith in life and love. The CD itself is a trip through a really rough time. it opens with looking at the world from the bottom of a well which is him at his lowest, and ends with this, which is him after the battle. he is thankful for getting through it all and knows that faith and love is what brought him here.
