Waiter Lyrics

Under blankets these hills cover neatly
We’ll take steps to make sure our failures are hidden
But it’s hard when our voices echo over ripples?
That form on the lakes and the edges they prey on we'll shine

Swim around the lake
Hoping like hell we'll find shelter in
Coal mines incubating lies fathers and families,
Hammers and ties brace for the winter
Until that rumble leapt up to his jaws

Spines of furrowed earth jut jagged as they rise
Like welts up on our backs on our bellies
Its cold as the lord in the bedroom
Lord at your feet
The lords shaking the headboard
With nothing to eat

Cold restless stumbles wanders towards the light
That breaks out from the town little homes bearing sheriffs
Playing across drifts to the back of the brain
Where they flicker like fire speaking of times that they shined

I think it's about secrets and trying to cover up, not sure about waht though. My first thoughts were government secrets - "make sure our failures are hidden", but it might be an affair - "lords shaking the headboards". Or it could be a mistake to do with mining that the government tried to cover up.

its about waiters in restuarants and drugs and teaching people to make it themselves and people not forgetting how to find it, because they can''t forget, no matter where you go, theres always a restaurant, theirs always food. you never know, but sometimes, you do.

it's about failing at doing what you wanted to or where meant to do and trying to cover it up with a simple job and falling into the system and then that other failure eats away at you. that dream that used to shine but now only flickers and eats away at you.

humble 024 nailed it. Its about losing your way, wasted potential, etc.

There's so many people waiting tables, living day to day. And they could shine if they had the chance

i love this song, and i agree with humble on the meaning, but one of the things that makes portugal so great is that their lyrics can be interpreted so many ways...

so to each his own

I believe this song was influenced by Edgar Allen Poes' "The lake to..." references such as "Spines of furrowed earth jut jagged as they rise".

In spring of youth it was my lot To haunt of the wide world a spot The which I could not love the less- So lovely was the loneliness Of a wild lake, with black rock bound, And the tall pines that towered around.

But when the Night had thrown her pall Upon that spot, as upon all, And the mystic wind went by Murmuring in melody- Then–ah then I would awake To the terror of the lone lake.

Yet that terror was not fright, But a tremulous delight- A feeling not the jewelled mine Could teach or bribe me to define- Nor Love–although the Love were thine.

Death was in that poisonous wave, And in its gulf a fitting grave For him who thence could solace bring To his lone imagining- Whose solitary soul could make An Eden of that dim lake.
