I'm leaving today
So why don't you care?
I am afraid
I am afraid
Tonight, I'm running away tonight
Tonight, I am
So far away
Say you what you say
I am afraid
I'm so afraid
Tonight, I'm running away tonight
Tonight, I am, I am
You're so far away, I guess
You're so far away, I guess
Throwing all my calls away
You don't need me
You don't need me
Drink at night and sleep all day
Well, I don't need you
I don't need you
I drove on every interstate
But you don't need me
You don't need me
Well anyways, yeah anyways
It's over, over, over, over tonight
I'm running away tonight
Tonight, I am, I am, I am
So why don't you care?
I am afraid
I am afraid
Tonight, I am
Say you what you say
I am afraid
I'm so afraid
Tonight, I am, I am
You're so far away, I guess
You don't need me
You don't need me
Drink at night and sleep all day
Well, I don't need you
I don't need you
I drove on every interstate
But you don't need me
You don't need me
Well anyways, yeah anyways
It's over, over, over, over tonight
Tonight, I am, I am, I am

i think this song implies that he was trying to find someone and show them that he wants to salvage a relationship by all means "i drove on every interstate" but depsite his effort that person doesnt feel the same, and doesnt need him at all..and because of that, he tells him self "i dont need you" and even though hes "so afraid" by being without this person the only closure he has to help him move on without this person and "run(ning) away tonight" would be that "anyways, it's over, over, over tonight" and he is finally very focused on leaving by ending the song with "tonight i am, i am, i am" i feel he needs to hear it from his own voice in order to really feel confident enough to do it.
ok, my version of the song starts off with you are my friend so why don't you care i am afraid, i am afraid.
but then after that, it doesn't have any of those lyrics, it's just "we lie(?), i feel fine," repeated over and over.
i'm really confused. and when i search for the lyrics, i keep getting different verisons.
great song, i think september pretty much sums it up.
the first line of the song, or at least the version i have is " you are my friend"

@efk121 yes, my version is completely different as well (starting with the line that you mentioned). I think our version must be better, because the raw power and emotion expressed in his voice is hard to imagine being matched by anyone else—- including himself. It sounds like he’s saying “I feel fine… when I’m naked.” Am I hearing it right? Is he saying he only feels good when he’s laying beside her? I don’t know, I was hoping to find out what others heard here. But I have to admit, I’m kind of enjoying the mystery and I suspect when...

Well, I have the CD to this, and from the insert this version is correct.
To me, this song really speaks to me in that I've told myself, "Everybody hates me here. I'm going to run away to somewhere else. You don't need me? Well I don't need you either." I really like how the title is "Feel Fine" and the song talks about running away from the problems, getting out the easy way. Depressing, if you will. I love this song, one of my favorites on the album.
edoras, I had that very same version (I got it off of Ares)...I think it's a demo version of this song. I searched again and tried to download another file and I got these lyrics and a fuller-sounding fully produced song.
I have a different version on my Apple phone as well. It’s hard to make out some of the lyrics (which is why I came in the first place) but I will write down what I think it says.\n\nYou are my friend\nSo why don’t you care?\nI am afraid\nI am afraid. \n\n(Chorus)\nBaby, I feel fine.\nBaby, I feel fine.\nBaby, I feel fine.\n(Then it either says, not sure which:)\nWhen I’m with you\n(Or maybe:)\nWithout you\n(Or perhaps:)\nWhen I’m naked.\n\nRepeats chorus again.\n\nRepeats chorus again, but also repeats the last line 3 times.\n\nThis may sound like a very simplistic and repetitive song, but it’s the emotional agony and escalating energy in the chorus that makes each stanza different and delivers the powerful punch. This guy is trying to convince himself that he doesn’t need his lost love, but the louder her proclaims it, the more obvious he is lying.\n\nBTW, “Baby” might he “maybe”. And also, if he is saying “when I’m naked”, he’s being symbolic (when he is without her). Of course, it could also be when he’s literally naked and longing for the feel of her touch. (Probably both.)\n\nIt is a very painful and yet romantic song.
