lol this is funny, he's being all smug because he's earning 22,000 from his city's job. when i listen to it it's kinda 80's like and breezy and cartoony. love this one.
It’s a funny song but I don’t think he’s being smug about it. He just saying “its alright”- better than some but not as good as the bloke from sales. It’s more a mockery of the situation many people are in when they leave university. Working in the city, on an average wage, doing little else apart from talking about women from work and drinking. “Pub club, sleep….” has the same theme.
Also I think the lyric’s “down Old Street Thursday night”, there’s loads of bars on Old Street. I’ve never heard of St. Earl Street.

yeh its bringing back the punk tradition of proper social commentry looking at the way a lot of people in the UK are in a frank and realsitic manner, getting by day at a time then going out drinking... much as Hard-Fi showed with living for the weekend, although i question the quality of those lyrics in places... these on the other hand are great a lot of credits gotta go to these guys for producing an album which keeps music not money at its heart and produces a set of lyrical wonders and whats more the tracks are the right length and unlike so much music right now (...arctic monkeys...) is not over-produced or pretentious
He said it was about when he went for an interview for a job that was 22,000 a year, and left the interview all smug, thinking he got it. He soon got a call telling him he wasn't "right for the job", as they say.
This song is about how having a life in the city earning a reasonable salary may be ok but is not good enough. It implies that 9 to 5 life is menial and unfulfilling. A lot of the songs on the album ar like this and what I like about this song is that it has a chirpy tune. Not dissimilar to The Smiths' "Panic", it makes a serious reflection on life, but does it an almost eerily chirpy fashion.

And I heard it live at Reading Leeds Fest with Bloc Party Maximo Park and Towers of London and lemme tell ya it FREAKING ROCKS!!!!!
