She's pregnant, they can't afford a child. They know its terrible but they pray the baby will die. Eventually her water breaks, and the child is either born dead or some neglect of theirs kills it, but he swears the blame isn't his.

i think also that if this child would be born, they would be 'stuck' in the famine, cementing their fate.

and the last lines of 'it just died, i did not kill it' are definately bittersweet
