I Can't Even Lift My Head Lyrics
If I ever should disappear
What would I come to?
What would I come to believe?
If I had seen your father
What would his face do?
What would his face do to me?
Oh, I can't even lift my head
To say a word
To say a word to you
I can't even recognize
What I did wrong
What I did wrong
Oh, I can't even lift my head
To say a word
To say a word
What would I come to?
What would I come to believe?
What would his face do?
What would his face do to me?
To say a word
To say a word to you
I can't even recognize
What I did wrong
What I did wrong
To say a word
To say a word

What an amazing song. Reminds me of The Upper Peninsula in terms of the music and even, I suppose, the meaning. Sufjan has this great knack for using small things, like this person's father's face, to make such a deep impact.
This song is a direct representation of my heart.
It is on the compilation "To Spirit Back the Mews" available from asthmatickitty.com which is his record label.
this is my favorite song ever. ever. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TAB THIS SONG. i can find the tabs nowhere nowhere nowhere.
The man is magic.
I always go on streaks with this song, listening to it 20 to 30 times in a row. It is one of the best songs to have in your pocket for a somber mood.
I take the song at the obvious - he screwed up and he can't even bring himself to talk to the person he screwed up with.
Except this is a perfect song representation of it.
"If I ever should disappear" instead of "If I should ever disappear".
But that feels completely irrelevant in the face of the awesomeness of this song.
Does anyone feel like maybe this song grew up to be be "A good Man Is Hard to Find"?
I don't know, but it sounds like a revival of the title of "Detroit, Lift Up Your Weary Head! (Restore! Rebuild! Reconsider!)"
sounds to me like he's saying "the" Father, not "your" father. which makes this song infinitely more relevant and heart-wrenching to me. ...those are just my views, though.
@annieover- you're right... and that makes it all the more powerful...
He must have really done something wrong to feel like he made God so displeased...
