These Are the Fables Lyrics
In coral and gray
In submarine chambers
One day
It swam for the light
The jewels that lit
The cities that float there
Cities in circles drawn perfect, complete
Holding the secrets on my street
My street, my street
So come in and play
The song of the siren
It's commonplace
You hear the voice rise
In one wave
And crash on your doorstep
Making the circle here perfect, complete
These are the fables on my street
Ten thousand dancing girls
Kicking cans across the sky
No reason why
Why ask to pay yourself
For the call of the wild
You found this child
So raise him
And wind your back
Come back to the river
The currents speed by
And hope the men fear
The hammer comes down
So hard on the evening
Cracking the dawn of your
Days are repeat
These are fables on my street
My street, my street
Heaven shook hell
And down from its pockets
The ring in your bell
It fell through your hands
Hang at your feet
The doors that won't open
Marking the journey of our friends complete
These are the fables of my street
My street
My street, my street
Lay down in glory, you're not alone
My street, my street
Lay down in glory, you're not alone
In submarine chambers
One day
It swam for the light
The jewels that lit
The cities that float there
Cities in circles drawn perfect, complete
Holding the secrets on my street
My street, my street
The song of the siren
It's commonplace
You hear the voice rise
In one wave
And crash on your doorstep
Making the circle here perfect, complete
These are the fables on my street
Kicking cans across the sky
No reason why
Why ask to pay yourself
For the call of the wild
You found this child
So raise him
Come back to the river
The currents speed by
And hope the men fear
The hammer comes down
So hard on the evening
Cracking the dawn of your
Days are repeat
These are fables on my street
My street, my street
And down from its pockets
The ring in your bell

These are the fables of my street

Lay down in glory, you're not alone

I love this song. One of my favorites off the album.
I like it too
This song took forever to grow on me, but it's one of my favorites now. Beautiful.
I love the instruments they use in this song... I heard it and was like WHOA.
Ahem, if they ever do make a movie from Fables (the comic) they better use this song. :D
this song is goddamn amazing. where are the rest of the comments? :(
What an amazing song. I can't believe it is not more popular. When she sings,
"Ten thousand dancing girls Kicking cans 'cross the sky,"
wow. Definitely grabs me.
I agree-great song. What does it for me actually is the ingenious melody. Definitely one of the most original melodies I've ever heard. As far as the meaning though I'm clueless. Even for them this is cryptic.
Okay, this is probably a really odd interpretation, but I think it's about a mother that has had a miscarriage or stillbirth?
The setting itself is ocean-like and the ocean is often used as a metaphor for sex. Cities in circles could be the ovaries, the ten thousand dancing girls the eggs. The "wind back to the river" could be the actual birth, as well as the hammer coming down on the evening.
But you get towards the end of the song and there's this:
Heaven shook hell And down from its pockets The ring in your bell It fell through your hands
So I'm thinking the baby didn't make it? The final lines "lay down in glory, you're not alone" would support that too. I don't know, does anyone else have any ideas?
I was turned on to New Pornographers by a friend at work that is young enough to be my son.. as a 60 year old music lover I fell hard for this group. There is not a single track on the twin cinema cd that I do not absolutely love and have in bedded into my soul. The time signatures, lyrics, selection of instruments and the singers make this one of the best of an entire generation. Good job to all who brought this art to us (you youngsters..;-)
