The Dream Lyrics

Whisper in the yard and turn the trees all into toys,
Lay there on the ground and turn the dirt into your joy,
From what I see and what I know,
It's all been boring lately so I suggest we trade a question mark in for a maybe,
time your riddles right and make a point that has no sense,
make sure that you're smiling and the money's been well spent,
Innocence and ignorance it all goes hand in hand,
I'm not sure that I'm right but I hope you'll understand,
I hope that you're still searching for the start that has no end,
and all the plastic people ave now become your friends,
Before you start to drift and your soul begins to scream,
I just wanted to tell you that you're only listening to 'A Dream' (echoes fading)

i love this poem well the part that says"Whisper in the yard and turn the trees all into toys, Lay there on the ground and turn the dirt into your joy"i think that means take what you got or to some poeple who do have anything find joy in the little things. and"From what I see and what I know, It's all been boring lately so I suggest we trade a question mark in for a maybe" i think this means you should take risks. the rest i have no clue lol

Shinedown is one of the few bands out today that actually are so unafraid of exploring new territory and defying the system, they start off their sophmore album with.......

........

....... the guitarists daughter reading a poem written by Brent....

It was so random at first but it fits the album so perfectly, It adds that little X-factor that makes that much more amazing, seriously what other rock band would have the intro to an album..... just so you know, an intro gives you the first impression of an album.... What band out today would have a little girl reading a poem be the first track?

That's right next to nobody, And that's the thing about Shinedown, These guys know how to rock, and they know it, but they also know how to be artistic and they know it too....

The way the songs feedbacks on the outtro to the guitar on the song heroes is absolutly perfect,..... Shinedown is so amazing, If you ask me, these guys should be one of the top lyrics searchs on the site....

Shinedown is awesome, but please don't cheapen them by calling them anything other than standard mainstream hard rock. (Although this was written years before The Sound of Madness, so it's a liiittle more applicable now.)

This poem is friggin trippy, I was hoping somebody had a thought on the meaning... everytime I hear this track when the girl says "your're only listening to a dream" I always get goosebumps. I'm not sure what it means but I think the part "all the plastic people have now become your friends, Before you start to drift and your soul begins to scream" means, becoming friends with the "right people" (not nessecearaly people you like but people that will get you somewhere in buissness/polotics/etc.) to achive your goals and have the ideal life (to some), then you start to drift (twords conformacy?) your soul begins to scream because you don't really want to be doing whatever your doing... but I don't think thats an accurate meaning of the poem.

The first part sounds like maybe it's the "dreaming" part of the poem, but I actually think that it is the reality. "Whisper in the yard and turn the trees all into toys, Lay there on the ground and turn the dirt into your joy, From what I see and what I know, It's all been boring lately so I suggest we trade a question mark in for a maybe," I think that is about making what you already have, not what you bought, into something more. Like a child plays in trees and dirt, but it does get boring after awhile. So you begin to let go of it for something more. "time your riddles right and make a point that has no sense, make sure that you're smiling and the money's been well spent, Innocence and ignorance it all goes hand in hand, I'm not sure that I'm right but I hope you'll understand, I hope that you're still searching for the start that has no end, and all the plastic people ave now become your friends" Thats when people start to watch you. You cant mess up, you cant fail them. You say what they want to hear, but not necessarily what you think about it. You wear the masks and buy the things that they want to see. You eventually just get so wrapped up in becoming what others want you to be that you are oblivious to whats truly going on. You're just trying to please everyone else. "Before you start to drift and your soul begins to scream, I just wanted to tell you that you're only listening to 'A Dream'" Before you get sucked into the things and completely entrapped, its just a reminder that it's not reality. You are reality, what you do is your dream.

AMAZING poem. It's so cool to see that Shinedown isn't afraid to be a little different.

the dream is a riddle. i have no idea what it means. i disagree with the interpretation of being sucked into the world, but that's only my view. i don't know if anyone has the creed album human clay, but in the insert, there's this creepy image of these little kind of evil looking children covered in dirt running in circles. this is what the song reminds me of... it's really dark and sinister and it's the coolest thing i've ever heard to open an album with. i really believe that it doesn't have an earthly, simple meaning at all. i'll work on it and repost.

I think the first part means that you should climb the trees and roll in the dirt and just live the dream of life, which is to be happy.
