Lately Lyrics

That the sky would lift
That Id find my place
That Id see your face in the door
And the sun would glint
On a time well spent
On a time that aint no more

Taste the broken hearts
In the vacant lots
See the fruit that rots on the trees
Try to turn my head
Leave it all for dead
But its in my mind always

Honey lately Ive been way down
A load on my mind
Honey lately Ive been way down
Load on my mind

Someone tell me where did it go
Darling I'm damned if i know
I seen that look in your eye
No one ever gave it a chance
I could have said in advance
You saw it all at a glance
And goodbye

Drag a salted kiss
From this cup of bliss
Watch a new lie twist on the breeze
You can paint it red
Leave it all for dead
But its in my head always

Honey lately I've been way down
A load on my mind
Honey lately I've been way down
Load on my mind

Someone tell me where did it go
Darling I'm damned if i know
I seen that look in your eye
No one ever gave it a chance
I could have said in advance
You saw it all at a glance
And goodbye

Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye

i don't know why you said its fairly easy to understand, and then hardly explain it...

i think its about the past, and how he wishes he could relive his greatest times again with possibly his loved one. but he realized that no matter how you put it (what color you paint it), its in the past. he knows he has to leave the good times behind but at the same time he realizes that they're a part of him and he'll never fully move on

Forget the album version. If you want to hear THE best version of not only this song, but one of the finest performances of David Gray's career, then take a look at this song on his new DVD. Trust me, you wont be disappointed.

yeah the album version sucks..i think if i had heard it first i would never have liked this song that much. i don't know what the one on his new dvd sounds like, but if you look up david gray lately on youtube a truly amazing live version comes up...its 9 minutes long and has so much climax

Simply beautiful.

I think this one is fairly easy to understand, but the back and forth in the bridge I find extremely catchy. I think this is about discontent at the current situation and everything that goes to waste ("fruit that rots on the tree").
