Pretty much this song is about a girl who is lying to the guy who wrote this, in my opinion stringing him along and making him think there could be more between them than their actually is. The guy has a feeling this is the case, and he wants her to end the games..but deep down he still wants her. The sharper words from trusted friends bit refers to the "sharper" truth that he wants them to reveal to him. The good burns bit means that he's learnt that being unfair to one person means that he will eventually do it to someone else.
