I'll Try Anything Once Lyrics
You'll be aware of 5 about
7 ways to go through school,
Either you're noticed or left out
7 ways to get ahead,
7 reasons to drop out
When I said, "I can see me in your eyes",
You said, "I can see you in my path"
That's not just friendship that's romance too,
You like music we can dance to
Shut me up,
I'll calm down,
And i'll get along with you
Some people take it pretty well
Some take it all out on themselves,
Some they just take it out on friends
Oh everybody plays the game,
And if you don't you're called insane
I've got to see you one more time
Son you were born,
In 1984
Shut me up,
I'll calm down,
And i'll get along with you,
And everybody was a mess
6 things without fail you must do,
So that your woman loves just you
Oh all the girls played mental games,
And all the guys were dressed the same
If you only remember it once?
Oooh, ooooooh
Shut me up,
I'll calm down,
And I'll get along with you

I believe he says
Seven ways to get ahead And seven reasons to drop out
That seems like it would make more sense than "drop 'round."

this song is so pretty. it has such a good sound, even though it's so slow (and you can actually understand the words!) more people should hear this song.

this is the Heart in a Cage B-side. I love it because it shows what a beautiful voice Julian really has (a lot of newbie Strokeians think he's just a raspy droner). It reminds me of the original Such Great Heights (by Iron & Wine). Download it NOW, or I'll have to spank you. (:
This is really old comment, but you're wrong. The original Such Great Heights was by The Postal Service, and then Iron & Wine covered it.

The title is correct, its a B-side, early version of You Only live Once, and in my opinion a better song

i'm pretty sure the correct lyrics are as follows;
Ten decisions shape your life, you'll be aware of 5 about, 7 ways to go through school, either you're noticed or left out, 7 ways to get ahead, 7 reasons to drop round, when i said ' I can see me in your eyes', you said 'I can see you in my bed', that's not just friendship that's romance too, you like music we can dance to,
Sit me down, Shut me up, i'll calm down, and i'll get along with you,
There is a time when we all fail, some people take it pretty well, some take it all out on themselves, some they just take it out on friends, oh everybody plays the game, and if you don't you're called insane,
Don't don't don't don't it's not safe no more, i've got to see you one more time, soon you were born, in 1984,
Sit me down, shut me up, i'll calm down, and i'll get along with you,
Everybody was well dressed, and everybody was a mess, 6 things without fail you must do, so that your woman loves just you, oh all the girls played mental games, and all the guys were dressed the same,
Why not try it all, if you only remember it once, oooh ooooooh,
Sit me down, shut me up, i'll calm down, and i'll get along with you,
(okay one more time)

francovonbear, i think you're wrong.
but it is drop out not drop round

is anyone sure that it's "soon you were born in 1984"? "soon" doesn't seem to fit in... it sounds more like he's saying "son" or "saying"...?
I agree, it sounds like 'son' to me
I agree, it sounds like 'son' to me
Also agreed, sounds like "son" to me. The word son almost completely changes the meaning of the song, too, as the whole song could be about a father/grandfather giving advice to his son about growing into the world. Even if this isn't what the song actually means, I like this interpretation.

i think it's supposed to be:
i think it's supposed to be:
"i've got to see you one more time soon, you were born in 1984"
"i've got to see you one more time soon, you were born in 1984"
it's like how he says "you'll be aware of 5 about"... he places words in a somewhat unnatural way in order to keep the flow and the rhyming of the song
it's like how he says "you'll be aware of 5 about"... he places words in a somewhat unnatural way in order to keep the flow and the rhyming of the song
in a live version, he sings "i've got to see you one more time, that's when you born, in 1984"
in a live version, he sings "i've got to see you one more time, that's when you born, in 1984"

This song is amazing, I think they should release it on an album eventually. Just the way it is.
But to me this song shows the amazing talent of julian, he rights the lyrics AND the music for the strokes. he does that by writing the music for a keyboard and then transfering it over to the guitar. this song was the original version of you onlive live once this shows his skills and also how he writes a song its amazing

It's also about how people react to certain situations
"7 ways to go through school, either you're noticed or left out, 7 ways to get ahead, 7 reasons to drop out"
Much of the song is also about the way society expects people to behave and how people react to that behaviour.
"There is a time when we all fail, some people take it pretty well, some take it all out on themselves, some they just take it out on friends, oh everybody plays the game, and if you don't you're called insane"
The only bit I can't figure out is...
"Don't don't don't don't it's not safe no more, i've got to see you one more time, soon you were born, in 1984"
I also think it's 'SON you were born...' rather than 'soon...' Great song though, probably my favourite Strokes song.

about the whole 1984 thing.....i don't it referes to any one person or that the song is necessarily dedicated to someone. i think that 1984 line might possibly be a reference to the book 1984. someone on youtube said that, and after they said it i agree with them. anyway.....the way i see it, this song is about LIFE- in general, and the differet parts of life. The 1st verse is about education- your early years, the second, talking about failure and everyone playing the game, is about (perhaps) work and career. or at least it can be realted to that. every one is so pressured to be successful and wealthy,, but no one's perfect- we all mess up at work some times, and struggle- but we continue in the rat race of work and economy b/c we need the money and we all have this drive to be successful, hence the "everybody plays the game, and if you don't you're called insane." the last verse is about perhaps about the social aspect of life- dating, relationships, relating to other people and forming friendships/bonds with those of your gender and those who are not. to me that verse is like observations noe might make from just spending time with people in a social setting. i think the few other parts ("when i said i can see me in your eyes...", "dont dont dont dont...", and the "why not try it all"....) to me those are things you might experience during each as[ect of life that's mentioned. the friendship-romance part sounds like a conversation b/w two young people, the 1984 verse could be maybe relating to how one might look to novels for life lessons (if the person i came across who suggested the 1984 part is about the book, is right), and the "why not try it all" part is about how we might not like everything in life but we shouldn't shut ourselves off from it oor others, we should try to experience as much as possible while we still have the time
