Nos Da Cariad means Goodnight Sweetheart It's the never-ending hope that tomorrow will be better than today. Go to sleep and tomorrow you will find your life again.

For me this song has something depressing... Only by reading the lyrics I would agree with Jaq3892, but with that melody I would say the song is more about closing one's eyes. It's about going to sleep, living in a "perfect world" and not accepting reality.

ive been stuck on the meanin of this song for ages, then after lookin at the posts and reading the lyrics from the last verse backwards to the first verse i kinda get the feelin that the terminal illness is a good explanation of the meaning. "all wired up in a dawnin ray" i think is a metaphor for bein wired up at a hospital. i think the 3rd verse hints the twilight of someones life, ie. a person is dying. 2nd verse- the ride to the hospital in the ambulance with the movin beneath the trees and reflection in the water lines. 1st verse- a person findin another person dying and panickin, "rain like silver in my ears" i think shows panic metaphorically ringin in ur ears. oh well, i cud be way off!!

The "silence is golden" line also always struck me, which made me think terminal illness that someone couldn't talk about because it was too hard to face. The "long black Cadillac" also brings to mind a Hearse, though I realize that's the wrong type of car. He has great images in all his songs here, this one especially.

St. Christopher is the Saint of travel if I am not mistaken. That being the case, I would assume that this lyric is representing the journey from life to death.

the chorus about running/silence is golden, here i am, I aint afraid of nothing kinda sound like the knife edge between acceptance or death, almost looking forward to the peace/not suffering anymore, and the flight instinct, the instinct to survive, to not accept death or even always scrabbling for that miricle cure to hang your hope on.

I see it as its a New Beginning...Re-birth ??!!

LYRICAL ANALYSIS Yes this song does seem to deal with death, and yes it does seem to reference birth. (I wondered though since death comes before birth in the lyrics.)

(I wondered with the running, is he truly running away from something ? but in the chorus I considered isthe running is just living life, using muscle and energy to move your life forward. Could it be both running from and to something ?)

This is the key. THE RUNNING: I think the running is simply being active, fighting against the challenges of life (fear and death) living your life. Whereas death/ fear is referenced in the song, i think that it is more about OUR RESPONSE TO OPPRESSION

MUSICAL ANAYSIS

position 1: Musically the versuses are filled with a melancholic and oppressive piano, there is a feeling of intrepid pusuit (the listener can identify with being chased by something/ someone).

position 2: The chorus however conversely is filled with a hopeful and courageous confidence ‘we'll be running afraid of nothing’; the feel here is of adolescence full of verve and drive.

MY PERSONAL INTERPRETATION So combing both lyrics and music :

This song is set at the end of the day. Feeling tired, low, oppressed by a hard day. There are always fragile and fearful things that come to haunt us when we are weaker.

He tells his sweetheart (could be a lover, a muse, or merely externalising a message intended for his soul) ‘go to sleep’, soon you will dream and you will experience a different existence.

In the moment of release, 'silence is golden', separated from the forces of oppression in the real world, the soul can be re-charged.

In a dream ; we run for our lifes , like an athlete with a sense of purpose, without fear, instead facing fear and overcoming all obstacles.

This is the cycle of death and rebirth, every day, letting our fears die and the rebirth of hope.

SOMEWHERE BETWEEN SLEEP AND THE DREAM, we recharge, and HOPEFULLY , in the next day, we will be running, in the real world (rather than just in a dream)

(the significance of on its knee (one knee) is a proposal, whereas on its knees is about submission)

This song is clearly about death, maybe of a loved one.

Saint Christopher is revered to as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. Not only the saint of travel but also the protector against plague and 'unforseen death' i.e. a death without the last sacraments.
