An Imagined Affair Lyrics
A sky as black as regret
is rolling aside for the blue
Impossible face to forget
These feelings belong in a zoo
She brings the morning
She brings the morning sun
So lost in the sound of her voice
I don't even hear the words
When she says come on get out
The past will find us out
Come on get out please
And don’t breathe a word
She brings the morning
She brings the morning sun
But all this an imagined affair
While sitting in a bar spilling in a bar
I drink until the doorman is a Christmas tree
And my speech is just a gas leak
is rolling aside for the blue
Impossible face to forget
These feelings belong in a zoo
She brings the morning sun
I don't even hear the words
When she says come on get out
The past will find us out
Come on get out please
And don’t breathe a word
She brings the morning sun
While sitting in a bar spilling in a bar
I drink until the doorman is a Christmas tree
And my speech is just a gas leak

to me, it's a man imagining having an affair with a girl who is spoken for. the first two lines saying how immediately he felt bad for doing it, but then got over it. the second verse is her ushering him out so they don't get caught together. it's a sad ending, where in reality he is just sitting, drinkng and imagining this all, and he probably won't ever get this girl.
Judging by the title, it sounds like what happens when you've been away from your girl for too long...you lose complete perspective and think completely irrational thoughts...in this case he believes she's off with someone else...I cant quite tell by the lyrics though if this is true, but it sure seems like it.
I don't think it is about Edith. Guy said in an interview, that he wrote that song about a woman he had NO relationship with and he dived so deep into it that he sudden felt like he has a relationship. I like the ending somehow...bitter and funny in the same moment...but what means "my speach is just a gas leak" ??
"my speech is just a gas leak" a gas leak is silent but stinks like his booze-soaked belching breath.

It's actually a really pretty song.
"but what means "my speach is just a gas leak" ??" It means he gets so drunk that he can't even talk beyond an exhalation of breath.
I think it is all in the lyric he just dreamed up some situation in which he gets together with someone whilst getting drunk, their quantity of songs about drinking make them very British indeed.
It's about Edith Bowman, as are most of the songs on The Leaders of the Free World album. When Guy Garvey and her were together, she got around.
