Eleanor, Put Your Boots On Lyrics

(Alex: You ready, Nick?
Nick: Yeah)

Eleanor put those boots back on
Kick the heels into the Brooklyn dirt
I know it isn't dignified to run

But if you run you can run
To the Coney Island rollercoaster
Ride to the highest point
And leap across the filthy water
Leap until the Gulf streams brought you down

Mmmm Hmmm

I could be there when you land
I could be there when you land

So Eleanor take a green point three point
And turn towards the hidden sun
You know you are so elegant when you run

Oh if you run you can run
To the statue with the dictionary
Climb to her fingernail and
Leap yeah! Take an atmospheric leap
And let the jetstreams set you down

I could be there when you land
I could be there when you land
I could be there when you land

So Eleanor put those boots back on
Put those boots back on and run
Come on over here
Come on over here
Come on over here

Cover art for Eleanor, Put Your Boots On lyrics by Franz Ferdinand

Eleanor Friedberger is his girlfriend, as mentioned. He misses her a lot while touring (Europe) and talks to her on the phone frequently. Each verse is basically saying "you might look like a bit of a loser, but drop what you're doing and come over here, cuz I miss you." Coney Island and the Statue of Liberty are NY landmarks because she's based in Brooklyn, and there are a few references to crossing the Atlantic to be in Europe with him. Kind of a cute song because it acknowledges it's sappy.

I wish Franz would do more songs like this... I really love this song. And I agree with gmac, it does sound rather like the beatles (who even happen to have their own song about an Eleanor). I think that they may have been aiming for a beatles-esque sound on this song... if so, they nailed it beautifully.

Eleanor Friedberger is the singer/guitarist from The Fiery Furnaces.

I'm pretty certain he's talking about her.

I think the last user got it right. Alex has said himself it's not about Eleanor Fiery Furnaces (liar), but I guess it's his way of making it more universal.

Yeh that's her.

Hi Pegz. Mabye it means that whatever she does he'll always be there, if she wants him to be. But i don't really know.

aww, that's sweet. that sounds very plausible, goochylittlepig. i wondered if the "statue with the dictionary" could be the statue of liberty since they talk about NYC.

ahh i'm seeing them on oct. 15 in boston!

seeing these lads at home in glasgow on the 22nd November, shame its in the SECC but still its a homecoming gig woohoo!

and he actually addmited thay the song was about eleanor freidberger in The Big Issue in september, a lot of it is acutally written about places he's never been though so... but yeh it does sound just like the beatles really helps to give the album ups and downs, as opposed to the first one where all the songs were quite similar, although still great.
