The Day the Aliens Came (Hawaiian Feeling) Lyrics

I will wake up at six a.m. again
And I will find my way to the front door like a soldier crawling through the smoke and carnage
Smoldering bodies at my feet
I'd love to stick around but I've got someone to meet
And I will put my best foot forward
And I'll thank God I made it out of there
On the day when my new friends come

I will present myself in my nice white tuxedo jacket
And I will look out at the day through my dark sunglasses
And take in the scene
The house behind me and the people in it will all go up like steam in just a minute
There's gonna be a redefining of some borders
And I will recieve my orders
On the day when my new friends come

The rooftops and the sidewalks
Will all melt like plastic
And oh friends, old friends, dear friends
I'm gonna look fantastic
There wont be any reason left to cry
Because there wont be any people left to cry for
My memory's gonna vaporize itself
And my Italian shoes, well, they will be to die for
I believe I can fly
Might you look up at me and wave goodbye
On the day when my new friends come

Why can't it be called "Hawaiian Feeling"?

i assume it's an inside joke of his. perhaps we'll never know.

I really enjoy this song, but Darnielle reprises the couplet from Palmcorder Yajna, a superior song. Still, the irony and beauty of the lines "...Cry for / And my Italian shoes / Well they will be to die for" more than compensates.

This kind of reminds me of the end of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," when Frank N. Furter "goes home".

'And I will put my back foot forward' should be "best foot"

"My memory's gonna vaporize itself"

Sort of a new mantra of mine I do suppose.

And who else could make a song about alien abduction and the destruction of earth so danged beautiful?

I wasn't specific on which couplet, the lyric he repeats is "in it / minute." In Yajna, "If anybody comes to see me / Tell 'em they just missed me by a minute / If anybody comes into our room while we're asleep / I hope they incinerate everybody in it." Here its usage is cheaper, not as integral to any intensity.

This song reminds me of some twisted view of the day of the Lord, where he will come to judge and destroy the sinners and rescue his followers. Since it's from the Sunset Tree sessions, I'd have to say that it has something to do with his life, maybe even just a fantasy of his as a child, his take on what he learned through church or whatnot.

I always believed the aliens/"new friends" in the song were the cops coming to get his stepfather. He is now free.

to me this seems like a dream that he has. When he can leave his old life and start a new. The alien's just seem to represent a new life.

this is one of my favorite songs, hands down

It feels a lot like Pirate Jenny in that the situation feels so hopeless there isn't even any fantasy of escape that doesn't rely on some huge external force the singer will never see.

"It feels a lot like Pirate Jenny in that the situation feels so hopeless there isn't even any fantasy of escape that doesn't rely on some huge external force the singer will never see."

I think that's a really good insight. At a concert, John Darnielle said that the song is about feeling that you have to leave your abusive home, but at the moment you're stuck there because you're too young or don't have enough money, or have no other place to go. So in the meantime, you fantasize about various deus ex machinas, like Batman pulling...
