I think this song is about when you're getting older but you've not been living like that, and you're slowly realising that you're getting older and thinking that not much is left to live for. When, obviously there is, it's just a stage every person goes through when they reach the older years :]

i think its about an old man who has wasted hes life drinking alcohol and not settling down and havning a propper family. he probably had kids and diddnt bother to see them cos hes always drunk. and now hes getting old hes starting to see that hes wasted hes life away.
