I can’t undo the day
It won’t go under the rug
I pull out all the stops
And you pull the plug
These are sober days and I know it can’t be
But I’ll miss you the way you miss the sea
Don’t look down
Keep staring like you’ve never seen the stars
If you need me to remind you who you are
Little blossom there’s the shiniest soul
Just behind those eyes
‘No longer my affair’
Well I can’t go there just yet
So I’ve come to love and trust those friends
That are holding your net
Falling off used to mean
Maybe grazing a knee
And I’ll miss you the way you miss the sea
Don’t look down
Keep staring like you’ve never seen the stars
If you need me to remind you who you are
Little blossom there’s the shiniest soul
Just behind these eyes
While I won’t second guess
What you’re thinking of me
I will miss you the way you miss the sea
It won’t go under the rug
I pull out all the stops
And you pull the plug
But I’ll miss you the way you miss the sea
Keep staring like you’ve never seen the stars
If you need me to remind you who you are
Little blossom there’s the shiniest soul
Just behind those eyes
Well I can’t go there just yet
So I’ve come to love and trust those friends
That are holding your net
Maybe grazing a knee
And I’ll miss you the way you miss the sea
Keep staring like you’ve never seen the stars
If you need me to remind you who you are
Little blossom there’s the shiniest soul
Just behind these eyes
What you’re thinking of me
I will miss you the way you miss the sea

Well, I guess this is rather straight forward. They are no longer together, but still the boy (Since Guy is singing) misses the girl and thinks the world of her.
Lovely song, I have to say.
How brilliant is the drumming hidden at the end of the track?
lovley song
this has one of the most beautiful choruses i have ever heard.
Definitely a "break up" song - but a beautiful song, entirely.
the drumming at the end isn't actually that spectacular; it just sounds good because of the way it's recorded. not that i'm knocking richard's drumming; he's great. his style is quite different to others and more conventional bands, and it gives their music a whole extra dimension, for me anyway.
i love this song. i really related to it when i first heard it, so it's been one of my favourite elbow songs ever since. beautiful.
Another beautiful song I agree. Ever since TSSK had references to http://www.turnmeup.org/ on it I've been doing that whenever I come across one of these 'secret' bits - and this one is just delightful! I must have listened to the album a dozen times and, of course, I knew the little drum riff was there and I did actually think it was quite good. Then this week I went on a long car journey and popped the CD in for another listen. This time I really did turn the volume right up to the max as soon as 'The Stops' finished - and finally appreciated the dry wit of the banter.
Heard Guy himself say last night that this was about when love on its own is not enough and no matter how much you put into the relationship you just have to leave, for your own sanity- even though you love them and will miss them sooo much. This one breaks my heart- going through this myself now

I absolutely love this song.
I think I heard "Keep staring like you've never seen the stops" the second time, but not the first. I've slowed it down to half speed and I can definitely hear a "ps" sound.
It's about alcohol abuse.
"These are soberer days" I take literally. And "...you miss the sea" refers to another kind of liquid. This makes lines like "those friends that are holding your net", "remind you who you are" and "there's the shiniest soul just behind those eyes" a little more meaningful.
It's not necessarily not about a breakup though; maybe she left him because she didn't want or think she needed his help.
I don't think this is necessarily about a breakup. I think he's giving up drinking for a a girl, perhaps a daughter? I'm not 100% sure.
