The really great thing about Dan Bejar is that his lyrics are so layered that they seem to be about many things at once. This one is a perfect example. On one level it's about the music industry's, and consumers', fascination with passing fads. But that doesn't explain everything in the song. Exactly what, after all, does this have to do with sublimation? Bejar never leaves you fully satisfied with your understading of his work, the mark of a great artist!
I love this song, he sounds like a whinier Bob Dylan, if such a thing is conceivable. It's about the music industry, or just the phenomenon of "the next big thing" trends that come and go and rock and roll rebellion. Even Destroyer has a price.

well sublimate can mean 'to rise above something' so maybe bejar's hoping we can rise above all these fads.
It just occurred to me that "express your bloated self" could be a reference to Madonna ("Express Yourself") - and if Madonna is the female Prince (big 80's star) then she is Princess...
