Most of what I think has been said in part by others, so sorry for that but I thought I would collect mine and others interpretations that I agree with in one place.
The song starts with three friends enjoying each other’s company. Unknown to her, the narrator (Damien?) idolises the conscientious girl. She is innocently being herself but the narrator takes so much more from their friendship than she means to give. She, like the sun, shines for everyone, not especially for him.
There’s also another man. He seems considerate and thoughtful, picking up after his little brother’s (possibly the narrator) mistakes and generally looking after him. The man like the girl behaves how he does for everyone, not just for the narrator. The metaphor of the dogs running in the morning sun perfectly describes how the narrator enjoys the other’s company.
The bridge really shows how the narrator's (and the other man's) love for the girl, but she still knows nothing (white symbolising her innocence). She drives them wild and makes the narrator feel like a child in love again. She means everything to him. Then he tells her his feelings; splashing paint on the white innocence of the relationship. Shocked, she leaves; the friendship spoilt.
The final verse describes how the girl gets comfort now from the other man (the wolf). Either they are in a relationship or he is there for her as a close friend. He gets all she has to give now behind doors closed to the narrator. He has to leave them to each other.
The line 'There's no need for me' breaks my heart everytime...Whenever I dress in white this song fills my head-and thats something I do more often since first hearing it! Think I'm waiting for my Damien Rice to come along...What girl isn't?
The key to me is whether it's "..orange tree and a girl that does yoga.." vs "..orange tree, the girl that does yoga..". I think the "she" is the yoga girl. I think the two males are brothers and the one singing is the little brother. They're like dogs running. The girl that does yoga gives to the little boy like the sun gives, in general without specifically giving just to him. When he's tagging along with his brother at her house, he's infatuated with her and acts like a goofy kid. His older brother is more than a dog, like a wolf to keep her warm, and then as a dog he needs to stay away from the wolf. The day ends, the story is told, there's nothing for him, he's superfluous when there's the girl that does yoga. To me, so strong a feeling of loving your older brother, overpowered by the beauty of his girlfriend and the sadness of being put to the back as the day ends and everything settles in. That my view of it and as such, a lovely song.
The feeling I always get is knowing someone so perfect, or having a great time, but knowing nothing will materialize, but still just feeling alright about everything. I always imagine a great friday night, but waking up to the sun shining on a lonely Saturday, but still smiling.
I think it is about two people who love one another but neither one says it. The first part of the song is his perspective, then hers, then the last part is back to his. Because neither of them said anything about their feelings she moved on to someone else and this person isnt good for her. He wonders how she could love someone like that and not him... he just doesnt know that she loves him as well.
This song used to be "The Girl That Does Yoga". It is one of the only songs of Damiens that I had never heard (not for lack of trying. It is a really pretty song.
I don't know why, but this song reminds me of the message in "Fake Plastic Trees" by Radiohead, albeit a completely different tone.
I think it's the lyrical structure: the first verse about her, the second about him, and the last as reflections of the narrator (I think the little dog line is Damien referencing himself).
In "Fake Plastic Trees" you have the same 3-person structure: "it wears her out", "it wears him out", "it wears me out".
But the difference in tone changes the meaning of each song, and that tone is reflected in the last lines: "if I could be who you wanted" vs. "and there's no need for me".
It's almost as if Damien is laughing at his own pathetic infatuation, ashamed that the little dog has "gone a little mad". I think the wolf represents the other man, the one who gets to be with her. So really, it's a song about jealousy.
But who knows. Feel free to say I've gone a little mad. All I know is I need this song right about now. So thank you, Damien.
...And if you've ever seen a dog who's been pent-up for a long time set free into a big green field, then you know that's an image of pure joy.
i agree that he's laughing at the way he feels. i think the part after "and she moves my world" should be: "...and she gets splashed in waiting turns away and leaves me standing..."
she gets tired of waiting around for him, so she turns to this other "wolf" to keep her warm.
I love this song, I believe it is going to be the second single although Damien will have to sing 'Love you' in the clean version, lol.
The lyrics are wrong, though. I suppose I should sort that out.
I've got two questions, 1.) What do the lines "And she (or he) gives, I get without giving anything to me" mean and 2.) why does he say "we" (we drive around and she drives us wild"
