Abbie's Song Lyrics
Oh river, with your water so clear
I can see straight to the bottom where you stand so still
Oh river, with this beauty you found
And you act just like a mirror with your sun sinking down
Yeah, you act just like a mirror with your sun sinking down
I'm so selfish
Won't you forgive me my haste
But I hope you last forever
At least all of my days
Oh river, with your eyes so green
Well, I think they are the prettiest that I have ever seen
Oh river, with your waters so calm
And I will not forget you wherever I roam
No, I will not forget you wherever I roam
I'm so selfish
Won't you forgive me my haste
But I hope you last forever
At least all of my days
At least all of my days
So I will drink the whiskey
And you will drink the rain
At least all of my days
At least all of my days
At least all of my days
I can see straight to the bottom where you stand so still
Oh river, with this beauty you found
And you act just like a mirror with your sun sinking down
Yeah, you act just like a mirror with your sun sinking down
Won't you forgive me my haste
But I hope you last forever
At least all of my days
Well, I think they are the prettiest that I have ever seen
Oh river, with your waters so calm
And I will not forget you wherever I roam
No, I will not forget you wherever I roam
Won't you forgive me my haste
But I hope you last forever
At least all of my days
At least all of my days
And you will drink the rain
At least all of my days
At least all of my days
At least all of my days

underrated
I do not know what Joe meant when he wrote this song, but this is what it means to me.
In 2014 I lost a friend named Abi to cancer. I had been a Joe Purdy fan for a few years, and in fact, soon before my friend first became Ill, on one of the last times we hung out together, we realized we were both a fan. After she passed away, I remembered this, started listening again, and found this song that I don’t think I had ever heard.
To me, my Abi was the river. I wanted her to last forever, but she didn’t. Instead, I was left to drink the whiskey, while she, buried, was left to drink the rain.
This song, as you might imagine, hit me hard. It was somehow so beautiful and sweet, and yet just punched me right in the stomach. And I couldn’t turn it off.
I doubt this was what Joe had in mind while writing it, but that’s the cool thing about music. It’s going to hit everyone different based on what’s going on in their lives.
