Here Comes The Night Lyrics
Here comes the night.
Roll on you careless evening,
When we unite
Not a force concurs,
Not hell nor heaven,
So let it come, let it rain,
Let it burn though you and me again
In the slums without name,
and it isn't only poverty to blame.
Here comes your man.
Rolling down the street the callous fiend,
He puts it in your hand
And all the world is but a whistle and a milkshake.
O how can you breathe little blue?
You have hooks, you have holes in you,
In absentium and in lieu of all the things that have been promised you...
But O my sweet how incomplete you are,
in your eyes a smile so sweet
A silly soldiers scar
Splits you face from ear to ear,
You pretend that you simply cannot hear
The bells and the bombs going off in the galleria.
Here comes the night.
Roll on you careless evening,
When we unite
Not a force concurs,
Not hell nor heaven,
Let it come, let it rain
Let it burn through you and me again
In the slums without name,
And it isn't only poverty to blame -
My sweet how incomplete we are,
In their eyes am I from dust
You from my bones imparted.
And if that don't make you laugh at nature's rough replacement.
Too late in all : Here comes the night
Here comes the night
Here comes the night
Here comes the night
Roll on you night. the night good night. roll on.
Roll on you careless evening,
When we unite
Not a force concurs,
Not hell nor heaven,
So let it come, let it rain,
Let it burn though you and me again
In the slums without name,
and it isn't only poverty to blame.
Here comes your man.
Rolling down the street the callous fiend,
He puts it in your hand
And all the world is but a whistle and a milkshake.
You have hooks, you have holes in you,
In absentium and in lieu of all the things that have been promised you...
in your eyes a smile so sweet
A silly soldiers scar
Splits you face from ear to ear,
You pretend that you simply cannot hear
The bells and the bombs going off in the galleria.
Roll on you careless evening,
When we unite
Not a force concurs,
Not hell nor heaven,
Let it come, let it rain
Let it burn through you and me again
In the slums without name,
And it isn't only poverty to blame -
In their eyes am I from dust
You from my bones imparted.
And if that don't make you laugh at nature's rough replacement.
Here comes the night
Here comes the night
Here comes the night
Roll on you night. the night good night. roll on.

Just leaving this here from a burner as some kind of anchor to the future from a painful present.. this song is about an affair, or at the least an impossible and unrequited/unrequittable love. A man and a woman who live in two phases, places or states; the 'day' when all is normal and appears as it should be, acceptable, expected.. and then the 'night', or when they are together (metaphorical night, just the opposite of being apart) where they defy norms and expectations and bonds or maybe vows to others.. (when we unite, not a force concurs, not hell, nor heaven..). It is unjudgeable, enigmatic, elusive and indefinable. There is something illicit about their connection.. so heaven cannot endorse it, but it is full of joy and love, so hell can not accept it either.. so both hell and heaven agree and disagree with it, confounded. It's both right and wrong, everything and nothing.. so in all ways, just is and must be. Much of the song refers to the specific dynamic.. seems the woman is in an inescapable bond, or one that she doesnt have the courage or autonomy to leave.. and is observed by her secret and illicit love, lamented, as he can see the pitfalls (the callous fiend, puts it in your hand, all the world a whistle and a milkshake.. you have hooks, you have holes in you in absenteism and in lieu of all the things that have been promised you..) so a neglectful partner to his love.. who values trinkets and tokenism over connection and authenticity, who maybe speaks to love and emotion and care, but it's all empty promises and superficial material things. And the singer/lover knows he provides more and better and deeper, and would, but can't. He also observes her innocence and naivety.. a 'smile so sweet a silly soldiers scar splits your face from ear to ear..' she listens to his 'war stories' and tends his injuries and scars, but sees no lasting impact or importance or parallel to her own, so they are just stories..ones that she will experience, he knows.. but she can't see or believe. He knows he would spare her them, keep her safe and happy and innocent and unscarred.. what a curse. ... finally, and this is important too, the song includes some reference to how the author feels for her, how this woman has made him see women generally and her specifically.. he mocks the crude idea from Genesis that Adam was made from dust, Eve was made from Adams rib... that the two of them together and independently are so incredible that it's an offense to think that he was created from mere dust and then she, or women generally, were further derivated and made from mans rib or side..? To see and feel and experience so much of and for a woman while at the same time holding the idea that she is somehow less than, or of, or created from a small part of him.. ridiculous! ) if that don't make you laugh at natures rough replacement). There's no hope for you, or them, or us (well to late in all).
i think this song is primarily about incompletion with love and life in general. not understanding much at all about either of the two - but knowing it is found threw a lover.
