This seems like a song about distance relationships to me. "We were so close" (emotionally) "but so far away" (physically). After time passed, it took its toll on him, and he basically tells her to put up or shut up, because he can't "wait all [his] life on a street of broken dreams". He obviously feels like he could have been with her forever and wonders if she feels the same way, by asking "I still wonder if you remember the night- it could have been you".
Good song, but the reality is that there are simply too many little fishies in the sea to ever wait for someone who has chosen not to be there. That's when you say I don't want you...ever.
