Fireflies Lyrics
Before you met me I was a fairy princess
I caught frogs and called them prince
And made myself a queen
And before you knew me I'd traveled 'round the world
And I slept in castles
And fell in love
Because I was taught to dream
I found mayonnaise bottles and poked holes on top
To capture Tinker Bell
And they were just fireflies to the untrained eye
But I could always tell
Cause I believe in fairy tales
And dreamer's dreams
Like bedsheet sails
And I believe in Peter Pan
And miracles, anything I can to get by
And fireflies
Now before I grew up I saw you on a cloud
And I could bless myself in your name
And pat you on your wings
And before I grew up I heard you whisper so loud
Well life is hard and so is love
Child, believe in all these things
I found mayonnaise bottles and poked holes on top
To capture Tinker Bell
And they were just fireflies to the untrained eye
But I could always tell
Cause I believe in fairy tales
And dreamer's dreams
Like bedsheet sails
And I believe in Peter Pan
And miracles, anything I can to get by...
And fireflies...
Before you met me I was a fairy princess
I caught frogs and called them prince
And made myself a queen
And before you knew me I'd traveled 'round the world

No one's commented on this? What is wrong with you people?!
It's about the loss of youth and innocence "before you met me, I was a fairy princess", and just about being a kid and playing make-believe. I don't think there's any deep meaning behind it, but I love it.
I love the story behind this song and it's author. I watched that oprah so many times (gotta love tivo). I wish I could have grown up where there are fireflies instead of freeways.
When I saw Tim and Faith on the Soul 2 Soul 2 tour -Faith mentioned that she loved this song becuase the songwriter's mom had died when she was really young. When the writer had gotten older she felt like she had "discovered" her mom all over again and came to terms with her death.
So when she is singing the second verse and she sees her "on a cloud" the mom is of course the angel. I think ultimately this is a song about a dream world where the mom is still alive and the writer gets to meet her mom.

.i first heard this song on oprah. im not really a huge country fan but this song is amazing, beautiful. the lyrics are so inspiring. its about following your dreams. sometimes things seem impossible, but if you believe in yourself you can achieve your goals. ultimatley, this is a great song.
It's about song about being a child, and then growing, and still believing in things like dreams and love, and mircles. A really sweet song.
