Twist The Knife Lyrics
tenderly
tenderly
please take my breath from me
into the fountain
and up from the graves
tearfully
joyfully
burn what is left of me
I don’t want these burdens
I’ve handsomely gained
you’ll be my guest
and i’ll let you stay
leave me the check
I’ll pay with the rest of my life
twist the knife
carefully
quietly
you took what's young from me
I didn't deserve it
I gave it away
cowardly
thoughtlessly
you walk away from me
and I'll tear my heart out to save you today
you'll be my guest
and I’ll let you stay
leave me the check
I’ll pay with the rest of my life
twist the knife
tenderly
tenderly
please take my breath from me
into the fountain
and up from the graves
tenderly
please take my breath from me
into the fountain
and up from the graves
joyfully
burn what is left of me
I don’t want these burdens
I’ve handsomely gained
and i’ll let you stay
leave me the check
I’ll pay with the rest of my life
twist the knife
quietly
you took what's young from me
I didn't deserve it
I gave it away
thoughtlessly
you walk away from me
and I'll tear my heart out to save you today
and I’ll let you stay
leave me the check
I’ll pay with the rest of my life
twist the knife
tenderly
please take my breath from me
into the fountain
and up from the graves

Maybe the song's about hopeless devotion; she's reflecting on what she's lost and given up to her love. there's a tone of deep regret, but also that she'd do it again. in any case, an underrated song of neko that i think ranks among her best.
Just a tidbit: this one was cowritten by Mike Daly and Ryan Adams from Whiskeytown.
"You\'ll be my guest. And I\'ll let you stay. Leave me the check. I\'ll pay with the rest of my life." It\'s about a person they met, probably a lover that they regret. A relationship that they began not knowing it would end so badly.\n\nIt\'s about the erosion of self esteem by a lover. It\'s about not wanting illusions, about wanting a catharsis.
