According to an interview, he came home one night, drunk, after his girlfriend had dumped him. He sat down at his piano and hit the RECORD button on a nearby tape player, and banged out this tune, making it and the lyrics up as he went along, drunk and heartbroken. Hence the rawness, and lo-fi sound. It's become one of my favorites of theirs.
