The Terrible Secret Lyrics

Pave these streets with open arms
it's always you we've waited on
the skin, the taste, the drug, the need
i'm asking, telling you, don't leave
erase the lines that we have drawn
it's always you we've waited on
and waited on and waited on
and on and on and on and on

these are our words that fill these mouths
but all the letters of the alphabet could never spell it out
these palms and frames that we tear through
to cling to something that is bigger than the failed attempts at you

wait wait wait, i don't wanna see
wait wait wait, i am not the person anyone would want to be

the perfect shoes with matching clothes
it is the lie we're always told
but nothing masks the shallow touch
like saying words that cost so much
while you're an addict to the need
to find yourself a way to breathe
the sex, the purge, the vein, the look
to replace feelings that we have took

these are our words that fill these mouths
but all the letters of the alphabet could never spell it out
these palms and frames that we tear through
to cling to something that is bigger than the failed attempts at you

perfection, it's perfection
but never quite enough, and never could disguise
the drugs to make it stay, the wanting in your eyes
the money that you've spent, but you're still an accident

we are more than words that fill our mouths
drink with us then tell us the answers that we need

these are our words that fill these mouths
but all the letters of the alphabet could never spell it out
these palms and frames that we tear through
to cling to something that is bigger than the failed attempts at you

wait wait wait, i don't wanna see
wait wait wait, i am not the person anyone would want to be

waiting here until you leave...

This song is tight. I think it's about how people put on masks and hide who we really are, and what we do (drugs, smoking, drinking, etc.) from people such as our parents or teachers or whomever we're hiding from. We don't want to them to see us in that state. We try to look 'perfect' as if nothing's wrong with us, but our insides desire it too much to hide.

Okay now this is the only Emery tune that I listen to on a regular basis, and to me it describes the hole in each of us that regularly struggles with things in the earth that we try to use to fill the space that only God can fill. Sex, drugs, clothes, our outer shell, whatever. I like the line about perfect shoes with matching clothes, because women especially think that dressing perfectly will make their life perfect. Material things and sex and drugs will work only temporarily, until we see that we've come to the place where that's not working anymore, and we try to fill it with more of the same or something new. There describes the typical unsaved American. The only thing that fills this space is Jesus. I know from experience, and always come back to the same thing. Jesus is the only one that can give me peace beyond all understanding.

Very well said, nestorcastillo.

Well, I agree with nestorcastillo. I'm not a religious person but for some Jesus is the only one who can save them. For me it's something different, but even talking about something other than Jesus this song still means the same thing to me. It's a wonderfully written song. I love it!!!!!

that part is saying how like we speak so much of how we want to be close to god...but "all the letters of the alphabet" could never express our need to have god in our lives....but we always hold closer to worldy things rather than god...hince "to clong to something that is bigger than the failed attempts at you"

wow. I just love these lines. They're something about the things we pretend to care about on the outside and the things we do to hide our true feelings and needs.
