To me this is a song from a son to a parent, or a student to a mentor who is dying. It acknowledges the fact that death is a final parting. We have come from nothing, and to nothing we will return. It recognizes that we all, as humans, are flawed and imperfect. "Forever burdened with the knowledge that I could have been so much more" and "I was never what you wanted, I could never never please." There is a kindness in the lyrics "I will try to ease your fear as the darkness pulls you under." as if he were witness to someone's death. The chorus is a ray of hope that the way we live on is through those we leave behind. The impact of who we were carries part of ourselves forward even in death. That's what forever means.
