every time I see someone mention "howie beck" I think howie day and get confused, ehe
to me, this song is about him being involved with someone, and seeing things building up to an inevitable bad end, or possibly it's an on again off again relationship, so he knows things are messed up between them and he doesn't know why or how to fix it, so he leaves her. the person he's leaving is upset and is blind to the problems he's seeing between them, so he's trying to explain himself.
I disagree with the bit about "to fight love, hate is all you need" though, because I've never been able to dislike or hate anyone i love...though they've argued with me about that. =P
I disagree. You can't truly hate someone unless they evoked love in you first. You can't truly be betrayed enough to hate someone without equally strong and opposite emotion to begin with. The line between love and hate is really really thin, and I think that's what he means by that line.
such a wonderful song. the breezy voice in the chorus, along with the guitar lick, is what makes howie beck such a pleasure to listen to. he established his trademark sound here early on.
