All Nereids Beware Lyrics
This spring of love resembles the uncertain glory of an April day
The Sun beating against our necks
Horizons still stuck in my mind
To the girl that can't forgive me...
Take these misunderstandings and send them back where they came from
Take these misunderstandings it's hard enough to live life as it is
Blinded, hooked on an anchor
All nereids beware! All nereids beware!
A shipwreck, a castaway
Coast to coast the high seas echo: 'it's not you it's me'
If the wind were down, I could drive the boat with my sighs
I could drive the boat, if the wind were down
Take these misunderstandings and send them back where they came from
Take these misunderstandings it's hard enough to live life as it is
Now her corpse lies lifeless, where X marks the spot
At the bottom of the ocean floor
Where X marks the spot
The finest treasures, where X marks the spot
The finest treasures are buried under waves
All nereids beware! All nereids beware!
That the finest treasure's buried under waves
A shipwreck left stranded, a castaway
The Sun beating against our necks
Horizons still stuck in my mind
To the girl that can't forgive me...
Take these misunderstandings it's hard enough to live life as it is
All nereids beware! All nereids beware!
Coast to coast the high seas echo: 'it's not you it's me'
If the wind were down, I could drive the boat with my sighs
I could drive the boat, if the wind were down
Take these misunderstandings it's hard enough to live life as it is
At the bottom of the ocean floor
Where X marks the spot
The finest treasures are buried under waves
All nereids beware! All nereids beware!
That the finest treasure's buried under waves

Great song.
Most of the lyrics tend to talk about a relationship that ended badly, i.e. "Horizions still stuck in my mind/to the girl that can't forgive me"
The "take these misunderstandings" stanza is him basically just expressing the effect of the break-up on his life: it hurts, and sucks, and burdens him.
This guy did something to fuck up their relationship, it ended, and all he has left is this lingering feeling of guilt for hurting his old woman. I know how that feels.
The one thing that I'm still having trouble grasping is the whole Greek "Nereid" allusion. according to Wikipedia.org:
"In Greek mythology, the Nereids (NEER-ee-eds) are blue-haired sea nymphs, the fifty daughters of Nereus and Doris. They often accompany Poseidon and are always friendly and helpful towards sailors fighting perilous storms."
This is hard to connect, and my guess is a bit of a stretch, but "blinded, hooked on an anchor" and "A shipwreck, a castaway" could possibly reflect conflicting feelings; i.e. yeah this guy did something to fuck things up with her, maybe he broke up with her, but he still feels a sense of loss, a sense of abandonment, a sense of not knowing what to do with oneself. I've broken up with girls before, only to realize 6 months later that I just threw away something great....yeah, it's cliché, but true.
So he's in this "storm," this post-relationship destruction, and he wants nereids to stay away...he doesn't want help, he doesnt want to be comforted by other..women? That's what I see. Maybe he's afraid he'll be tempted to go on a rebound, to seek comfort from a stranger, maybe he's pissed off at the whole female sex at the moment...all we can determine is that he doesn't want to be helped.
The "corpse" imagery, in my opinon, could be the way in which he figuratively "killed her," maybe in the sense that she herself has voiced death-like feelings due to their breakup, maybe in the sense that he feels like she is now dead to him and beyond touching or experiencing ever again...the fact that he refers to her corpse as a "treasure" inclines me to think that he wants to interact with her again, but she's so far gone in his life, it would take a miracle-rebirth or reanimation-to get her back.
And i'm done.

how he is trying to avoid the comfort or w.e you want to call it, and he knows that its better for him to struggle through the aftermath of his created destruction alone.

it's a song abot a shipwreck and some people named reptile, trixie, lindsay and sandie get stuck on an island with village people. and some other chick must of died and drowned under the sea, so reptile must of lost her...she must of been important to him to be the finest treasure buried under waves.
ok, i know that none of that was true, but it's fun to imagine it. possibilities???? =D
Word....I Like The Video Mostly Due To The Fact That They Don't Try To Play With The Song But Fucking Tear It Up( The Drummer With The Stick). Artists ALways Play Along With Their Real Song On Videos But Don't Actually Have The Sounds And Shit So Chiodos Seems To Me Just Said Fuck It.
from what i've heard, this entire album is based on pirates.
"A shipwreck, a castaway. Coast to coast the high seas echo: 'it's not you it's me' If the wind were down, I could drive the boat with my sighs I could drive the boat, if the wind were down"
"Now her corpse lies lifeless, where X marks the spot At the bottom of the ocean floor Where X marks the spot"
i'm sure there is more meaning to it but it does make sense.
You are all right except about the Nereids. They were sea nymphys that would help out sailors during tough storms, but the metaphorical "storm" he is having with this girl is way to dangerous and the nereids need to beware of the extreme animosity. The sea nymphys will have to sit this one out for their own safety.
standalonesociety6 - and then all the penguins moved onto the island of Goreville from Alaska to have a champagne jam.
I dunno about all the people who are saying that this song is mainly about the loss of this relationship and the hurt he's going through.
"Take these misunderstandings and send them back where they came from Take these misunderstands, it's hard enough to live life as it is"
He doesn't need any more burden from this girl, because he's trying to live and move on.
i kind of agree with Seewa - i think it's less about the protagonist ruining a relationship, or looking back on it, but more about the girl burdening him.
"all nereids beware" can maybe be saying to beware of the girl, since the nereids are always friendly, and she's apparently not for what she's putting him through.
the whole, "take these misunderstandings" part shows the burden she's putting on him. like, she can't let go of whatever happened between them, and he's almost begging her to. "it's hard enough to live life as it is" without her shit.
"if the wind were down, i could drive the boat with my sighs"
this part can also represent the burden. the wind representing the troubles he's having with the girl, and him driving the boat being him moving on. basically if she'd leave him alone he'd be able to move on.
i don't know - just my thoughts.
What happened to the old verison of this song? Maybe it was just the demo..but it had an absolutely AMAZING piano part. It's a shame that they changed it.. It's still an amazing song though. Has anybody else heard the first verison?
YESSSSSSSSS I SAID THE SAME THING And there's another version of There's No Penguins In Alaska

koo.
I agree with Bishkin mostly, although I have a bit of a tangent. So, I think it is about a guy who messes things up with a girl, but I think it wasn't the first time. I feel that the relationship they had was already on it's last leg, so to speak. In the verse "A Shipwreck, A Castaway. Coast To Coast, The High Seas Echo "It's Not You It's Me." If The Wind Where Down, I Could Drive The Boat With My Sighs." means that he messed up, doing something, but not too terribly bad, just one of those fights that starts because of something stupid, like the straw that broke the camels back. And she finally said "it's not you it's me" because Nereids are like Sirens, and they echo from coast to coast, the girlfriend/girl symbolizing a Nereid. He was upset about this, so he "Could Drive The Boat With My Sighs"
I believe when the verse says "All Nereids Beware" it's symbolizing girls that may want a chance with him, because there are 50 Nereids in greek mythology. They must beware because he's not ready for a girl, in fact he may want nothing to do with anyone. "This Spring Of Love Resembles The Uncertain Glory Of An April Day" symbolizes how even a strong relationship can suddenly turn sour, like a sunny April day will suddenly turn into Spring Showers, or if you live where I do, it rains on a sunny day, such as what might have happened the day things ended between the two characters implied in the song.
I also agree with Bishkin about the "X Marks The Spot" verses, except the treasure might be either his feelings for her, or his heart that he gave to her, a treasure that no girl could ever see again because of how things ended, and how it changed him so much.
Hope that helps, I just kina thought of that while listening to the song for two days, listening to it at least 10 times every hour xD
