Martell Lyrics

How hard can it be
To get a slap on the back from a room full of morons?
So you hate my sunglasses?
Well your precious Leeds is dead
Just so long as you know
The clean and the green
Make up you're music scene
And shy away from the words
That they've written for me
Can't you see that
Someones got their eye on you now
Don't you know?
And I don't want to be the one to let you know
La la la la can you hear me
I don't know
La la la la can you hear me
I don't think so

You should leave it to me
We cover insignificant miles for a miniature bottle
Do you know what I mean?
I don't think so
But we go for a smoke in the Smoke
And I like what I see
It's a vicious cycle but who cares when it's happening to me?
It's obscene
Can't you see that?

Someones got their eye on you now
Don't you know?
And I don't want to be the one to let you know
La la la la can you hear me
I don't know
La la la la can you hear me
I don't think so

The "miniature bottle" reference is to the small bottles of alcohol that are used, when empty to smoke crack cocaine, which they are quite fond of.

Yeah its a song about taking a break, from the scene in leeds he's getting annoyed by at the time, going off to smoke crack in london, the city has the nickname 'the smoke'. I think the "so you hate my sunglasses? well your precious Leeds is dead, just so long as you know" is a reference to a bad review of the band written by Gavin Miller on the Leeds Music Scene website.

Martell is a brand of cognac. The Libertines mention mini-Martell bottles in their song 'Tomblands'. They are used to smoke crack cocaine. London is known as The Smoke because of the air pollution in the city. "its a vicious cycle but who cares when its happening to me" is about drug abuse and how it is a downwards spiral but many drug users dont notice

So I discovered it in a Telus commercial (shoot me), but hey, I've found a new band I love! Such a fun song...makes me want to get out on the patio, in the summer sun and crack a cold one!

I've gotta say they are awesome live.

I kind of love Telus for leading me to this song. And the parrot, I love the parrot too.

I could have sworn this was an older song, as it seemed so familiar to me when I first heard it in the commercial. But, it's similar to the style of music I generally like (Arctic Monkeys, Libertines, etc.)

Aaah. Love. The meaning of this song seems obvious, but I'm not sure of the significance of the name (Martell).

I researched "Martell" (the word, not the song), and according to Wikipedia (real hard work, eh?), it is a leading manufacturer of Cognac. Is that of any significance to this song? One of the lines, "We cover insignificant miles for a miniature bottle", may refer to a miniature bottle of cognac? I have no idea =\

Ryan Jarman says "it's about how shit Leeds is".

I think it's slating the Leeds music scene, which i didn't think was that bad, although it is a quite old song.
