The forward-lyrics should be noted: a choral group sings the title of the song throughout.
"Fire on High" I've always thought to be a foreboding of judgement day, or as "time is not (reversible)" suggests, we're rushing headlong towards a techological doom. A warning to turn back. (though on an LP if you didn't stop spinning it backwards the needle might fall off the record).
Also fwiw, I remember CBS Football using the chorus as theme music in the 70's. Great stuff.
One of the best instrumentals I've heard. The acoustic guitar breaks sound AWESOME.
The beginning voice of this song literally gave me nightmares. It scared me, but then, the song itself always seems to calm me down.
Instrumental songs are so difficult to look up that its ridiculous. I spent about a month trying to figure this out because the radio never says the name of the song afterwards. good stuff though.
This song literally scared the crap out of me the first time i heard it, and soon thereafter, I refused to listen to it again. I was afraid to go to bed that night...just because of the voice at the beginning.

Back in the 1970s, the more melodic part of this song was frequently used as background music for NFL highlight films.
F***ing Awesome, the beggining scares the hell out of you, but the ending is up beat so its like the song is congratulating you on getting past the beggining, if you want to scare yuor friends wake them up in the middle of the night, kepp all the lights off and play this song, it works every time
When I was in high school there was a preacher who would go around showing presentations of the evils of rock and roll. He would play "Stairway to Heaven" backwards and stuff like that. Anyway, He played this song and said that it was intended for Satan worshippers. What a load of shit he was. The band was just fooling around in the production studio. Yea, they wanted it to sound scary, but not in an satan worshipping kind of way. Freakin' fuck up world we live in. These types of people do not realize they are the cause of most of the problems in the world with their self-righteous way of thinking.
they actually did this because of the "I buried Paul" shit and other stuff that happened during the 60s and 70s.. :)

Hey jughead, I am one of those preachers you speak of; yet I am a HUGE ELO fan! Not everyone who strives for godly righteousness causes world problems. Anyway, I absolutely love the drum rolls in this song. Some of the best anywhere!!
really now, how many wars have been fought over stupid religion?

@OneKnight You're obviously NOT one of THOSE preachers because, feeling as you do, I am willing to bet that you don't go around telling kids ELO makes "Devil Music". :D
