Fix what’s wrong, but don’t rewrite what the artist wrote. Stick to the official released version — album booklet, label site, verified lyric video, etc. If you’re guessing, pause and double-check.
Respect the structure
Songs have rhythm. Pages do too. Leave line breaks where they belong. Don’t smash things together or add extra empty space just for looks.
Punctuation counts (but vibe-editing doesn’t)
Correct typos? Yes. Re-punctuating a whole verse because it ‘looks better’? Probably not. Keep capitalization and punctuation close to the official source.
Don’t mix versions
If you’re editing the explicit version, keep it explicit. If it’s the clean version, keep it clean. No mashups.
Let the lyrics be lyrics
This isn’t the place for interpretations, memories, stories, or trivia — that’s what comments are for. Keep metadata, translations, and bracketed stage directions out unless they’re officially part of the song.
Edit lightly
If two lines are wrong… fix the two lines. No need to bulldoze the whole page. Think ‘surgical,’ not ‘remix.’
When in doubt, ask the crowd
Not sure what they’re singing in that fuzzy bridge? Drop a question in the comments and let the music nerds swarm. Someone always knows.
A great track. Go to Mogwai's webpage to see the twisted animated video for the song (man dropping pets off a building...)
For those who are baffled by the voice singing, it's a vocoder. One of the band members (presumably Stuart) sings into a microphone which is plugged into this device. An instrument is also plugged into it (presumably a guitar judging by the smoothness of the changes) and the notes from the guitar are imposed onto the voice and it comes out sounding like a computer/robot/alien singing. It's a beautiful effect and furthermore leaves the lyrics open to some interesting interpretation.
I met a guy convinced that, during the chorus bit, it sings: 'Under neon lights, there for the birds'
I can kind of hear what he's talking about!
If you can get hold of the Peel session version of this (which opens the Government Commisions album) then do because I prefer it a lot more than the album version.
A bullet of sunlight pierces the clouds; golden heaven touches ground
I see that childhood toy that hangs above the crib and spins around
Except it is suspended from a golden yellow sky
With paper mache animals and gargoyles hoisted from it
The golden Porsche makes its way up a Great Plains highway
Glaring sunlight from its grill
We never get a glimpse but there is the suspense
Of being hunted by a freak
What an amazing song. It's really emotional, as the video is too.
I think it has to do with death. I even thought about this before I saw the video. The killer comes (intro), kills you (climatic parts), and even thinks about his/her decision (ending). So, you are being "hunted" by a "freak."
I am amazed by this song, it's so beautiful. So, I was curious to see the video but now I'm sorry that I did. I love animals and it hurts me to see this kind of thing.
After watching the video, i think it could possibly be about abortion. The animals represent helpless beings being killed.
either that or its a little more literal. It could be about the encroachment of humanity on wildlife. We kill them off without really thinking about it.
love the song tho :)

I like this song a lot. The music video did really get me into this more deeply and to be honest it even made me cry a little bit...

Amazing. Enough said.
