Bruised Lyrics

I've got my things; I'm good to go
You met me at the terminal
Just one more plane ride, and it's done
We stood like statues at the gate
Vacations come and gone too late
There's so much sun where I'm from
I had to give it away
Had to give you away.

And we spent four days on an island at your family's old hotel
Sometimes perfection can be...
It can be perfect hell
Perfect...

Hours pass and she still counts the minutes
That I am not there
I swear I didn't mean for it to feel like this
Like every inch of me is bruised (bruised)
Don't fly fast
Oh pilot, can you help me?
Can you make this last?
This plane is all I've got, so keep it steady now
'Cause every inch you see is bruised

I lace my Chucks, I walk the aisle,
I take my pills
The babies cry...
All I hear is what's playing through the in-flight radio
Now every word of every song
I ever heard that made me want to stay
Is what's playing through the in-flight radio.

And I, I am finally waking up

Hours pass and she still counts the minutes
That I am not there
I swear I didn't mean for it to feel like this
Like every inch of me is bruised (bruised)
Don't fly fast
Oh pilot, can you help me?
Can you make this last?
This plane is all I've got, so keep it steady now
'Cause every inch you see is bruised

So read your books, but stay out late some nights (some nights)
And don't think that you can't stop by the bar
You haven't shown your face here since the bad news
Well, I'm here 'til close with fingers crossed
Each night 'cause your place isn't far

And hours pass...
Hours pass

She still counts the minutes
That I am not there
I swear I didn't mean for it to feel like this
Like every inch of me is bruised (bruised)
And don't fly fast
Oh pilot, can you help me?
Can you make this last?
This plane is all I've got, so keep it steady now
'Cause every inch you see is bruised
Bruised, bruised.

Well, since the album is about returning to SoCal after 3 years of straight touring with Something Corporate, and coming to the realization that his friends and loved ones have changed while he's been gone, I think a fairly safe interpretation would be this:

Andrew has returned home from touring, but only for a short break. He's spent the time with his girlfriend and now he has to leave her again, but he knows how upset she is at his leaving and it breaks his heart to go. He's begging the pilot to keep the plane steady because it's the last thing that he has that connects him to his girl. He knows that this is the way his life is always going to be, and he wants her to be happy, so he tells her to live her life, and not be caught up in missing him. But at the same time he wants her to know that he still loves her and wants her, and that if she wants him back then he'll be waiting for her.

Oh, and the "sometimes perfection can be, can be perfect hell" part is lyrically correct.

this song is so incredible. its, in my opinion, the best song on everything in transit. the way i see it is that its about andrews departure for his career, leaving his hometown and everything behind... and perhaps a special someone. but all in all, its about leaving someone and saying goodbye, and not wanting to go. this song means a lot to me because i'm taking my chances by pursuing a long-distance relationship, and it hurts when she's so far away and i know at the same time shes hurting as well. but we just want everything to last.

but back to the song, i love this song. shame no one else has given their props to this song.

agreed. going through the same thing.

i am surprised no one has commented on this song, because it's beautiful. andrew has this way of being able to describe human emotion through his music in a way that is just too genuine. "sometimes perfection can be perfect hell." i love this song.

i only got this account to post a comment on this song because i think im the only one so far having a complete different opinion on his lyrics. to me its about a nice relationship that ends up bad at the wedding ceremony. cuz he walks down the isle and she counts every minute that hes not there. idk. pretty literal, but it makes sense...

xxx

i believe the 'aisle' he's refering to is the airplane isle, not a chuch isle. who wears chuck's to their wedding? :P and the babies he's talking about, are babies on the plane. everytime i'm on a plane, there's at least one baby wailing a majority of the flight. i think its about him moving, and being really upset that he has to leave his girl, and every perfect moment and memory just torments him that much more. she counts the minutes that he isn't there, thinking about how long he's been gone, where as he thinks about it in...

not sure if anyone realized.. since you all seem to think this is about love...

it's about his illness.. like having cancer and if alludes to his girlfriend..or wife not sure if their married yet.

I just had to comment on this song because I love it. I'm listening to it right now and for some reason I feel like crying. it's amazing what effect Andrew's voice & lyrics always seem to have on me. he's great.

This song reminds me of Oasis' "Don't Go Away" and Jason Mraz' new one "Plane." They are each a little different, but being in a long distance relationship, oh man I can definitely relate to these sort of songs. And they are always so emotional. So beautiful. I love when the drum kicks in at the beginning of the song. :)

i love this song. i heard that the songs on EIT are organized into some kind of story...? all the times ive tried to analyze it ive hit a dead end. can anyone help me?

btw, i love the way he sings, "And I, I am finally waking up..."

This song is amazing. whoever thought anyone could write such a thing?

how does he do it. Andrew is a powerful man. he puts emotions into words and music.

didn't we trhink it was impossible?

sometimes. that 'words cannot describe' sayign is true.

exept for Mister McMahon. He is just beautiful.

anyway about the song, yeah i thought of it as leaving. but he didnt want to.

but ever since i found out-and ever since my heart broke into a trilion unfixable pieces-that he and Kelly got back together, i thought it was a song about her and how he had to leave her.

wasnt that the reason they broke off in the first place? he was always gone and stuff.

" SO much sun..I had to give it away, had to give you away"

was that about leaving California and Kelly?

i dunno. just a thought.

to me this song is about leaving someone you love when you are not yet ready to let go. Its about being with someone for such a short while and once you fall in love with them you have to leave.

"sometimes perfection can be- can be perfect hell" -its amazing to fall in love, but it ends up hurting when you are forced to end it

"Now every word of every song I ever heard that made me want to stay Is what's playing through the in-flight radio.

And I, I am finally waking up" -you are finally realizing that you are in love with this person, and every little thing reminds you of him/her.

ugh, amazing song.
