Recurring Motifs In Historical Flirtings Lyrics
You must be happy now I'm deaf to dial tones.
And your cool bangs have gone off with him.
And to me you say, "let's just be friends!,"
the four worst words in our language.
But here's another chance:
I'll fight him in a dance off and I'll win,
to a slow, slow BPM.
Or you choose the tune,
my repertoire of moves is really huge,
just put your selection in.
You must be happy now I sleep the day away.
And I can now see in infrared,
since my dark shades do keep the sunlight out.
But not the Lochness in my head.
But here's another chance:
I'll fight him in a dance off and I'll win,
to a slow, slow BPM.
Or you choose the tune,
my repertoire of moves is really huge,
just put your selection in.
You must be happy now I'm deaf to dial tones.

BPM- beats per minute. She blows our guy off for a shoddy dancer and our guy gets really depressed. Repertoire is sort of like things you have memorized.
(I don't understand the title.. Does anyone? Although due to the lack of comments..)
a relationship gone not quite as planned. she just wants to be friends... so now he's not answering his phone anymore and he's just sleeping the days away hiding from the world. but he can't hide from the fact the girl he wants is off with some other guy. and he hopes she's happy with her other guy, because he certainly isn't. and his proposition to win her (back) is a dance off with the new guy. hah.
...but really, I don't think SHTYM's lyrics are meant to be analyzed. they're just perfect as they are in their almost total ambiguity.
in response to sarahluvsu182 about the title "Recurring Motifs in Historical Flirtings", a motif is a recurring theme, subject, or statement, especially used in literature (i.e: a motif in Jane Eyre is forms of oppression). so, when he's talking about motifs in flirting, he's talking about the 4 words "let's just be friends." the song is about a breakup, obviously, and the obvious motifs that continue to occur in all breakups/relationships.
thankyou srhlafleur
