The Death of Girl Number Two Lyrics

Beneath your thick skin, there must have been a creature
controlling you like a marionette robot.
Or else how could you have said those things?
Or else how could I have stopped your heart?
I did the autopsy with my scalpel
and found that, yes, my brand new theory was true.
And the creature was a nasty bugger
and she bit my arm clear right through,
but now I know that wasn't really you, Girl Number Two.
But now I know that wasn't really you.

"The death of Girl Number Two," read the first line,
written by a fond paper columnist,
"actually happened in the 20's
and since she's been inhabited by an oddly whimsical creature.
She was a marionette to its hand."
Full Stop. And then the whole story.
And everyone sighed when it ran.

but now I know that wasn't really you, Girl Number Two.
But now I know that wasn't really you.

I think it's kind of stalker-esque. Like he had been watching her and built her up in his head to be fabulous. And then when he confronted her, she was a bitch. And ununderstanding. Or something. And he killed her out of disappointment. "Or else how could I have stopped your heart?"?

wow, no comments on this one yet? i am a HUGE fan of SHTYM. ive got all their albums, and out of all of them this song is probably the best i can think of. it really makes me feel like im missing something in my life.

This song is more than likely about a girl that the lyricist cared alot about/loved and that completely just became the complete opposite of what he thought she was and went off on him and so on. he says "but now I know that wasn't really you" saying, obviously, that the girl who said all those aweful things couldnt have been that girl he knew and loved.

but now I know that wasn't really you, Girl Number Two. But now I know that wasn't really you.....so beautiful......

It's his imagination after being rejected. He wants to make himself feel better after she said something cruel. So he creates a fiction about something controlling her, so he can still believe the good in the past was real but the cruel ending was because the evil robots controlled her. The "paper columnist" is just being whimsical I believe.

I could listen to the beginning of this song for ages.

this is probably my favorite song by SHTYM, others would have to be Hooplas Involved in Circus Tricks, These Fangs, I'm so tired, and Lets talk about Spaceships.

thendofthetour hit the nail right on the head. it's about a girl who he loved who did something he never thought she would do. and now to make himself feel better and preserve the precious memories of her, he just pretends "that wasn't really you" and that she was possessed by a "whimsical creature". and it sounds like the "fond paper columnist" was him. and "everyone sighed when it ran" because everyone else realized how ridiculous the story is to anyone but him.

i dissagree i think its about a couple who had a huge fight and they were yelling and yelling and the things she said hurt him so much he either hit her or broke up with her or something to that effect but she still cared about him so much she tried to kill herself and after he feels so much regret he decides that there is no way she could have done that and that there must be some explanation for her having acted that way and for her to have died he partly blames himself. along with the creature he thinks caused her to do these things, and the line about how everyone sighed when it ran is their friends and family who feel so bad for him and how he suffers because of this happening. maybe he went crazy with grief about her death right after their fight that he is insane and does everything he can to figure out why this happened. also the line where the creature bit his arm could be implying him cutting himself because hes filled with grief and sadness

My Interpretation

Say Hi is all fiction, and never has that much depth. Nice try though, sweetheart.

You are all so dead wrong. This song is clearly about zombies.

This song came out a while ago but it's bugging me that people interpreted "or else how could I have stopped your heart" as suggesting violence since that would definitely not be in the spirit of Say Hi. He's basically blaming himself for her heartlessness, ie she had been a normal girl until something about him turned her heart to stone (stopped her heart).

I should have added "but the fact that he feels it's his fault is too painful to confront so he chooses to believe a monster took over her body."
