Unplayed Piano (with Lisa Hannigan) Lyrics
Come and see me
Sing me to sleep
Come and free me
Hold me if I need to weep
Maybe it's not the season
Maybe it's not the year
Maybe there's no good reason
Why I'm locked up inside
Just cause they wanna hide me
The moon goes bright
The darker they make my night
Unplayed pianos are often by a window
In a room where nobody loved goes
She sits alone with her silent song
Somebody bring her home
Unplayed piano (unplayed piano)
Still holds a tune (still holds a tune)
Lock on the lid (years, years pass by)
In a stale, stale room (in the changing of the moon)
Maybe it's not that easy (through the only window)
Or maybe it's not that hard (in a stale, stale room)
Maybe they could release me (stale, stale room)
Let the people decide
I've got nothing to hide
I've done nothing wrong
So why have I been here so long?
Unplayed pianos are often by a window
In a room where nobody loved goes
She sits alone with her silent song
Somebody bring her home
Unplayed pianos are often by a window

Somebody bring her home

I think this song could also be about someone who is waiting to be loved (an unplayed piano) with her own tune that she just plays by herself until someone else comes along who wants to listen to it too.
I guess I'll start this one off:
It was written for Aung San Suu Kyi of Burma, the only Nobel Peace Prize recipient currently imprisoned. Apparently, the dictatorship in place in Burma has put her away for pushing democracy in a fair and peaceful manner.
It has certainly raised my awareness to this cause, as I had no idea such a situation was taking place.
The lyrics remind me of Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", yet completely inversed. It's almost as if she's quietly accepting her prison sentence, and Damien is saying, "we need to get this woman out, she's got this great song the world needs to hear..."
I didn't know that. Is interesting. Still I don't think this song is one of his best. Its just mediocre. I find myself not really listening to it, which is a pity because I love all of his former songs. Also I find it odd that so little people have posted about this song. Maybe its because like me, it doesn't strike as being particularly great.
FREE Aung San Suu Kyi NOW
Burma is ruled by one of the most brutal military dictatorships in the world; a dictatorship charged by the United Nations with a “crime against humanity” for its systematic abuses of human rights, and condemned internationally for refusing to transfer power to the legally elected Government of the country – the party led by Aung San Suu Kyi.
The military dictatorship in Burma have nothing to fear but words, no violence, no oppression, just peace. They are the haters of peace and democracy

This song goes good with my dad's cellphone ringer. ANyways, I don't see this song about Aun San Suu or whoever..I feel bad for her but, I see this as being mad because our baby grand piano is broken. shrugs Only, it doesn't sit by a window. I wish it did, though.
Have you realized that in the second verse the female singer is saying something between the lines? I wish I knew what she was saying.
I didn't know that about this song. That's really neat. I loved this song anyway, now I have a new-found respect for it as well.
i have had this song for ages, listened to it once. didnt grab my attention. after that i hadnt listen to it, until yesterday. and it blew me away. its so beautiful and at the same time creates a sense of melancholy in me.
beautiful song. love it.

I think the lines between the verses in the second verse are:
...unplayed piano ...still holds a tune ...years years pass by ...in the chilling of the moon ...through the only window ...in a stale stale room ...stale stale room
And I just realized the line is "in the changing of the moon."
Same line as the last line in the song.
