Lost Girls Lyrics

Girl, I know the hall looks dark
And the storm it seems so scary
Your face lit up on beads of lightening
And you start, you start running
And your eyes were light screaming
And since there is no end, and no beginning
You will run
You will run
You will run

Girl, I know the woods look dark
And the trees, they look so deadly
The girls around you are so frightened
And you start, you start to panic
Hear the breathing of a dragon
And the world, it really is on fire
And it burns
And it burns
And it burns

Vivan, your life is told over nineteen thousand pages
In a world too unreal to be cold-- Your innocence has faded.
Faded all your blues to gray, your skin has bruised through moving days, blue is peeling back away
Curling, cracking, painted

Girl, you've been rolled up in colorful carpets
Your blood is rushing all around you
And you froze, you're frozen quiet
And your eyes they are widened
Room unfurnished, like the nightfall
missing line here-- "just rubs from rolling you up" ???
you know you can't get up
When you do, you swear you will run
You will run
You will run
You will run

No one will ever save you
If no one will ever find you

yes, this immediately reminded me of darger's paintings, however i disagree with the carpet interpretation. Although there is a depiction of the vivian sisters playing on a carpet, i doubt that is the reference here. Darger was a recluse and it is believed by some authors that he was responsible for the slaying and abduction of a child in the chicago area in 1911. He wrote and illustrated his epic and rolled them up when he was finished with a section. After his death, his landlord found thousands of scrolls all over his aprtment, and didnt realize until later their brilliance. That is what is meant by "Girl, youve been rolled up in colorful carpets." and also he had no other furniture in the room, it was just bare except for his masterpiece, which explains "Room unfurnished, no light for nightfall..." part. This is just my opinion but its what i thought of when i first listened to the song. Also, the name of the manuscript was The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion, which explains "in a world to unreal to behold" and their fading innocence is not to the account of their sex organs, this was because darger didnt understand female anatomy and is thought to be a mistake, not intentional, but can be interpreted in all sorts of ways. Their innocence is fading because they are fighting against evil to protect the other young girls and themselves. the manuscript was 15,143 pages but also included the illustrations. sorry for rambling but i just set up this account and i love tilly and darger. this was def one of my favorite songs off the new cd.

"Hear the breathing of a dragon" is now "And your courage starts to vanish" on the album .. but I kinda miss the dragon lyric. :\

I think the song is a lament of the fact that these girls were hidden away and "lost" as a result of Darger's reclusivity. Tilly seems to contrast the going-ons of the "unreal" world as he depicted it ("You start running", "The girls around you are so frightened", etc.) with what is meanwhile going on in Darger's life ("You're frozen quiet," "Room unfurnished, no light for nightfall"). And "since there is no end and no beginning" to the girls' existence, for not being shared with the world, they are "lost" to a perpetual state of limbo: "No one will ever save you / If no one can ever find you". So I guess it's a commentary on sharing your love and beauty with the world, and the sadness of withholding your gifts.

My Interpretation

this wins best tilly song EVER.

Kianna's voice is amazing.

definitely one of tilly's best songs however, i've only heard the live version on NPR and i think that it would've been better if neely had taken main vocals on this song

but they do both have beautiful voices
