I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

This song and Careering are tied for my favorite songs off of Metal Box. I think this song is about John having an extremely hard time dealing with his past. The first half of the song seems directed to a particular individual in his life, while the last half is him manically going back and forth between deciding whether to cast off these memories. Examples: This person's had enough of useless memories ... Always remember I let you stay too long ... I could be wrong I think this song is an underrated masterpiece. The bouncing bass in the beginning is so perfect followed by Levene's super random guitar which seems to burrow its way into your consciousness (memory?).
