Now (and Then) Lyrics

peace colours
what’s left of mine
I used to find
pennies crushed on tracks
it’s a long way back to the station

now and then
I could be a friend
I could be a friend
now and then
now and then to you
I could be a friend of use
so hide me when you go
back amongst the reeds

cable coils
around my neck
whatever’s best
it seems insane to me
can’t escape the family tree
roots are buried deep
deep as you can climb
I’ll do
I could be a friend to you

now and then
I could be a friend
now and then
I could be a friend
now and then to you
I could be a friend of use
no second chance at this
I’ll watch you making love with them

build a fire
behind the school
come and visit soon
if you’re blue and alone
hold my hand they’re coming back for more
there’s always one more score
I’m sure to blame for this
I’ve got to get this change through and through

now and then
I could be a friend
I could be a friend
now and then
I could be a friend
I could be a friend
now and then
now and then

when i read the line "I’ll watch you making love with them" it al made sence to me

it's about him and this girl, and he loves her, but she doesn't feel the same way, so he resigns to be her friend, and she tells him about everything, including the men she sleeps with, and he loves her so much that he does not care, he just wants to be next to her, even thou hes life is all f*cked up already

this song is so sad and slow it makes a person want to cry. the line : no second chance at this \I’ll watch you making love with them, is said in such a raw manner that billy's voice resembles the hurt he feels. incredibly harsh yet it really displays a very particular feeling.

"so hid me when you go back amongst the reeds"

sad allusion to the baby Moses. abandoned by his mother and left behind in a basket, nestled in the reeds beside the River Nile ... found and rescued by an Egyptian Princess.

i think we should just be friends. it's better for both of us this way.
