The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

This is my favorite Coldplay song ever. I wish I knew what it really meant, what the boys wanted to portray but, for me, I interpret this song as simpler than it probably should be. To me, it's a cry out to be someone, not to get "swallowed in the sea" of the everyday and be no one. I think it could also be for someone who has died. Like, my mom died just over a month ago and on certain days this song is for her in that I don't want her to go unnoticed and just get swallowed up in the day-to-day goings on of the world where she no longer is.
I think that everyone wants to be noticed in some way and not be passed over or SWallowed In The SEA.
