The way I read this, is that the man has a 4 yr old daughter, and he wants her to grow up safely, so that when shes older he can live through her, like the way that parents revel in their childs accomplishments, and they feel in a way as if they suceeded because their children did. At the moment shes too young for him to really live through her, because shes too busy being a kid.
"Please let my girl go without knowing what I know"
I heard it as '..go, without..' and envisioned an action movie where they're using someone's love to get them to divulge information. It'd be a bit of a weak plea if that was the case, but all the same I thought it was an interesting take on that situation.
obviously its '..go without..' when you read the rest of the lyrics, and I opt towards a more open interpretation, because it doesn't matter if this girl was murdered or if he's a detective, It's simply about the preservation of innocence.
I guess there's no more to say about the meaning of this. So I can now say how much I love it!!
It always makes me think of CSI when listening to it too
as if Minus the bear songs didn't make me cry enough, guitars sounding so sweet,; then they put some brutal lyrics like that over. The plain and begging refrain of 'please'.. solid gold.

Seems like the girl's death was suicide, not an accident or a murder. The girl's neck was broken, and she was at the base of the tree - as though she hanged herself.
yeah someone explained the true story that this is based on, i've kindof forgotten it but that's the jist of it.. pretty much breaks your heart! such a gorgeous song.
She was holding a leaf, im guessing she fell from the tree, maybe grabbed it trying to hold on?
