Coming out of my cage
And I've been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this?
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss
Now I'm falling asleep
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his chest now
He takes off her dress now
Let me go
And I just can't look, it's killing me
And taking control

Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis
But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
'Cause I'm Mr. Brightside

I'm coming out of my cage
And I've been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this?
(It was only a kiss), it was only a kiss
Now I'm falling asleep
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his chest now
He takes off her dress now
Let me go
'Cause I just can't look, it's killing me
And taking control

Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibi
But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
'Cause I'm Mr. Brightside

I never
I never
I never
I never

    My Interpretation

Personally, I think this song is about a the guy who fell in love with a girl then she broke it off with him and he broke down. He finally came to his senses and get back into reality and go out and moveD on with his life, "I'm coming out of my cage And I've been doing just fine Got to, got to be down Because I want it all"

He eventually realizes that he didnt make it far with this girl "It started out with a kiss How did it end up like this? It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss"

But, he fell in love with her and wanted to keep her.

He soon realizes, he just isnt over this girl and when he goes to sleep he has a dream "Now I'm falling asleep"

In this dream he sees the girl calling a cab, the guy is taking a smoke, etc. (Going on a date with another man)

       "And she's calling a cab
       While he's having a smoke
       And she's taking a drag
       Now they're going to bed
       And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head"

After that in the dream, he sees them getting it on in the bedroom and he realizes he is completely jealous and hasn't moved on from this girl. And the jealousy is "taking control."

"But she's touching his chest now
He takes off her dress now
       Let me go
       I just can't look, it's killing me
       And taking control"

To be honest, I love the chorus, but it is really hard to understand. I think it could mean that his jealousy and everyone elses jealousy is just a devil to us all

"Jealousy, turning saints into the sea"

This part could mean that he just finding his way through all the songs/lullabies that can help him sleep at night but its really just a sickness, not a cure and it wont help him get over the girl.

     "Swimming through sick lullabies"

This part is somewhat confusing I don't know if its talking about him or the girl but I assumed it was about the girl choking on her false stories of who she was with and what she was doing.

     "Choking on your alibis"

In this part, I think he finally realizes that he wasn't destined to be with the girl and that's why he has the price to pay of losing her and finding the right one. So now, he must open up his eyes to see what his life meaning is and be a "Mr. Brightside" and keep his hopes up.

"But it's just the price I pay
      Destiny is calling me
      Open up my eager eyes
      Because I'm Mr. Brightside"

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Cajun Girl
Little Feat
Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
