Where are we?
What the hell is going on?
The dust has only just begun to form
Crop circles in the carpet
Sinking, feeling
Spin me around again
And rub my eyes
This can't be happening
When busy streets
A mess with people
Would stop to hold their heads heavy

Hide and seek
Trains and sewing machines
All those years
They were here first
Oily marks appear on walls
Where pleasure moments hung before
The takeover
The sweeping insensitivity of this
Still life
Hide and seek
Trains and sewing machines

(You won't catch me around here)
Blood and tears
They were here first
Mm, what'd you say?
Mm, that you only meant well
Well of course you did
Mm, what'd you say?
Mm, that it's all for the best
Of course it is
Mm, what'd you say?
Mm, that it's just what we need
You decided this
Mm, what'd you say?
Mm, what did she say?

Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth
Mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cutouts
Speak no feeling, no, I don't believe you
You don't care a bit, you don't care a bit
Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth
Mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cutouts
Speak no feeling, no, I don't believe you
You don't care a bit, you don't care a bit

(You don't care a bit)
Oh, no, you don't care a bit
Oh, no, you don't care a bit
Uh-uh, you don't care a bit
You don't care a bit
You don't care a bit

"Where are we? What the hell is going on? The dust has only just begun to fall Crop circles in the carpet Sinking feeling"

This is just my interpretation, but I think the song could be about a disaster or national/worldy upset (like 9/11 or the beginning of war). This is the reaction of the people immediately after it happens and the sinking feeling of impending strife.

"Spin me around again and rub my eyes This can't be happening When busy streets a mess with people Would stop to hold their heads heavy"

It talks about specific people having their eyes opened, as they realize the weight of the situation, unlike most people. It talks about the world being mutually downhearted and everyone in the streets hang their heads in misery or even respect for the dead.

"Hide and seek Trains and sewing machines All those years They were here first"

Disasters come and go. They hide for a bit, and no one actively thinks about them throughout their daily lives, but when they seek to destroy once more, everyone becomes aware. Trains and sewing machines, all those years, they were here first... Even though there are disasters, there are small things that last forever. Even if millions of people are wiped out, some things were here before, and they'll be here after many more disasters.

"Oily marks appear on walls Where pleasure moments hung before The takeover, the sweeping insensitivity Of this still life"

Talks about the infection of pleasure and happy lives with stains of horror and death. Some people don't even care, because their lives aren't affected... their lives remain still and they are insensitive to the victims.

"Mm what'cha say? Mm, that you only meant well Well of course you did

Mm what'cha say? Mm that it's all for the best Of course it is

Mm what'cha say? Mm that it's just what we need You decided this?

Mm what'cha say? Mm what did you say?"

Insensitive people making excuses, downplaying disasters, basically saying "no big deal" or even insinuating that we deserved it.

"Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth Mid-sweet-talk newspaper word cutouts (paper word cutouts) Speak no feeling; no, I don't believe you You don't care a bit You don't care a bit"

People don't speak with their own words and they use the outlines of cliche lines to pacify people. Leaders who get up in front of crowds to say "everything is under control" and "we're here to help" speak with no empathy (feeling). The people who really care don't buy it. They know that these people don't care a bit.

That's just my own interpretation... I don't think it's about lovers or scandal or breakups. There are more meaningful things in life.
