I agree with darkness that the song is about someone who is being controlled by the one they love, and even though he loves her, he doesn't completely trust her. So, he will keep her in the corner of his eye and watch her.

I think the person in this song wants somebody that is so high above him that he would do anything to have her. he would "be her pawn."

Regardless of what she does or how much she treds upon him for no reason at all he would stay by her side... if he could only get her...

I wouldn't say he is completely at her mercy, it certainly seems he has control of what happens w/ her and knows everything she does, basically like a stalker obsessed with his prey.

I think everybody is right about the meaning of the song - It sounds like a "pathological love" or obsession, BUT... i think there is an "Easter Egg" hidden in the lyrics.

I used to think this song was about obsession, unrequited love or an abusive one, but the name of the song (NUMBER ONE ZERO) and the solo that begins like blues and ends like a machine beeping (by the way, an amazing solo!) "bugged" my mind.

After some years listening to the song, i don't think its about a man or a woman singing to the loved one, but this song is about a MACHINE TALKING TO IT'S OWNER.

This song is about AI.

The machine/robot says its job and it "will keep him/her on the corner of it's eyes" no matter what happens, It is saying that it's job is to serve (sometimes as a king, in other times like a pawn) and It will be there by his/her side accepting that humans are childish, violent and change their minds just because: ""Ill be the little bird in your straw and sing you a song. I'll be there to take the fall, Though you tread upon me for no reason at all"

I think this song is a critique about the way we live "blind" and project this on all the others - even to our creations. This song is a MASTER PIECE.

While this isnt my favourite song on the album, i do enjoy listening to it. i think it is about someone who is being controled by the one that they love. they do anything for the person and are just ignored or trodden uppon

When you actually listen to whats being sung, this is a pretty depressing song lol. Someone keeps treating him like he is nothing, but he'd do anything for them. The bit where the song goes heavy seems to be a bit of a retaliation to the person. He's saying that he wont let the person forget that he's there because it wouldn't be fair to him. Thats what it means to me anyways. Have a good one all

I think you guys aren't giving the singer enough credit in this song. Yes he is the "dog" at the feet of someone (presumably a woman) who abuses him despite his loyalty, it seems he has alterior motives. "Just when you think you've left me blind, I will be creeping right up behind" - he knows he's being underestimated and labeled a lap dog, but he has been keeping an eye on her, and when the time is right (when she least expects it) he will come out of nowhere and turn the tables, taking advantage of her instead to get whatever it is he wants.

At least, that's what I got out of it. Great song, great album.

Hes telling this girl that he Loves that she'll never get rid of him

even though she treats him like dirt, it don't matter to him, hes always gonna be there. And he wants her to know he is whatever she chooses, Her King or her pawn, The Dog at her feet or a bird singing her a song.

And she may think that she has gotten rid of him, but he has her in the corner of his eye and he won't lose her.
