Everybody Wake Up (Our Finest Hour Arrives) Lyrics

Everybody wake up
If you're living with your eyes closed
See the man with the bomb in his hand
Everybody wake up

Oh baby it's not easy sometimes
They build these walls ever higher and hide behind them
Seems an odd way to make things right
Oh I feel crazy sometimes

Our finest hour arrives
See the pig dressed in his finest fine
The believers stand behind him and smile

Everybody wake up
If you're living with your eyes closed
See the man with the bomb in his hand
Everybody wake up

Remember the words of the misguided fool
Do unto others as you'd have them do
Not an eye for an eye as the golden rule
Just leaves a room full of blind men

Our finest hour arrives
See the pig dressed in his finest fine
The believers stand behind him and smile
As the day lights up with fire

Everybody wake up
If you're living with your eyes closed
See the man with the bomb in his hand
Everybody wake up
(repeat to fade)

I agree with WIP99 for the most part, and with nirvanaserenity about the eye for an eye. I could see it both ways actually. Jesus, the misguided fool, espousing love in such a hateful world, but misguided because no one listens. Hence, he's being sarcastic about it. Or, George W., misguided because he attacked Iraq as "revenge" for 9/11, hence, an eye for an eye. But definitely, I think this song is clearly about the Iraq war and DM's liberal, peace loving ideals (which I happen to love and agree wholeheartedly with).

I'm gonna try to break down the song as simply as possible:

Everybody wake up If you're living with your eyes closed See the man with the bomb in his hand Everybody wake up

Dave is very anti-war and is strongly against the war in Iraq. The man with the bomb in his hand is Bush. Dave's calling people to "wake up" and see what Bush is doing to our country and the rest of the world

Oh baby it's not easy sometimes They build these walls ever higher and hide behind them Seems an odd way to make things right Oh I feel crazy sometimes

This verse is about how he feels that America is "building [it's] walls" to defend itself instead of trying to help the rest of the world. Dave feels crazy because he thinks he's the only one who feels like this.

Remember the words of the misguided fool Do unto others as you'd have them do Not an eye for an eye as the golden rule Just leaves a room full of blind men

This verse is clearly about Jesus. The idea before Jesus was "eye for an eye". But Jesus came and told people to instead "do unto others as you'd have them do." He sarcastically calls Jesus a "misguided fool" because of how Jesus was thought of while he was still alive. Also, Dave feels that the people running the world are following the old rule instead of Jesus' rule.

Our finest hour arrives See the pig dressed in his finest fine The believers stand behind him and smile As the day lights up with fire

The pig is Bush. The believers are everyone who voted for him. The "day lighting up with fire" shows Bush bombing the rest of the world. I'm not sure about the "finest hour" part, it could either be Dave calling people to rebel against the government or it could be sarcastic talking about how the pig is rallying people into thinking that attacking other countries is their "finest hour."

Overall its a good song but Dave exaggerates way too much. He clearly hates Bush so he makes him into some kind of bomb-crazy madman.

Funny thing is that Dave really wasn't so far off showing Bush and his cronies to be "bomb crazy." If it weren't for the anti-war efforts here in the U.S., we'd already be in Iran as well.

It's about Bush and 9-11. Our finest hour was right after 9-11, when the whole world was with us. The day lighting up with fire is the towers. The believers are behind him smiling as he prepares to attack a country who had nothing to do with 9-11, Iraq. The misquided fool is Jesus, do unto others as you'd have them do...Bush is old testament, an eye for an eye...meeting violence with violence leaves a world full of dead men.

I think hes talking about the war, and just overall fighting. He is very adimit about peace, as well as we all should be.

I agree this seems like another one of Dave's hoping for peace songs.

who is the misguided fool?

I love this song. Its the same message as "The Last Stop", just meaning that war isn't the only way to peace. My favorite part is as follows: Remember the words of the misguided fool Do unto others as you'd have them do Not an eye for an eye as the golden rule It just leaves a room full of blind men

To me, it means the most. If we're just going to do what is done to us and kill everyone, everyone is just going to end up dead and what good does that do for us?

the bomb can be a bullet or a bible.. for both kill.

mankind makes rules to divide. makes gun to destroy and not to build up.

the pig is an unclean sacrifice before God...it aint a lamb. mankind changes all the rules..even to worship his God and hes wrong in doing so...wake up!.

man lives with his eyes shut, yet still belives he on the right path.. daves just saying open your eyes and realize what you see is what your really getting.

the comment of the fool and the statement of "an eye for an eye" can be seen as misunderstood by the person with their eyes closed.. in the ot law it was an equality of sorts. if a life is taken maliciously against another. an eye of the transgressor is required to equalised the imbalance. an eye for an eye, tooth for tooth, life for life.

but it changes in the nt. after the example of Jesus life for the life of the world. the expression eye for an eye becomes...a good eye for a bad eye. a good toothe for a bad tooth. a life for a death. mercy replaces judgement against the transgressor.

the misguided fool still believes the ot law.. bad eye for bad eye. when the ot is abolished and he doesnt know this.. the new law is mercy is exchanged for judgement without mercy.

the fool cant equate do unto others over against mercy exchanging justice. the fool remains blind in his misunderstanding...dave is deep as he points to truth.

I think that he's referring to the president as the man with the bomb in his hand, since he really is the man with control of the bombs. he sees him as a pig all dressed up for the public and the people backing him don't see all the violence (fire) lighting up our days.

Ogrods, The President isn't the man with control of the bombs. IT'S CONGRESS. TRY WRITING THEM! I hope DM is smarter than that. I think it's about relegious extremist. They are everywhere.
