Shine On Sweet Jesus: Jesus Song No. 5 Lyrics
Waiting for my ride
Jesus is floating outside
(Shine on, sweet Jesus, on me)
Watching the water rise
I'm getting lost in the tide
(Cry all your teardrops on me)
While I'm still myself your blankets covered me
Covered me while I was still asleep
Watching the planets shine
Reflecting yourself in the sky
(Shine on, sweet Jesus, on me)
Scraping these smiles of mine
Impossible one at a time
(Cry all your teardrops on me)
While I'm still myself your blankets covered me
Covered me while I was still asleep
Jesus is at my side
Wondering what he will find
(Shine on, sweet Jesus, on me)
Watching the water rise
I'm getting lost in the tide
(Cry all your teardrops on me)
While I'm still myself your blankets covered me
Covered me while I was still asleep
Jesus is floating outside
(Shine on, sweet Jesus, on me)
Watching the water rise
I'm getting lost in the tide
(Cry all your teardrops on me)
While I'm still myself your blankets covered me
Covered me while I was still asleep
Watching the planets shine
Reflecting yourself in the sky
(Shine on, sweet Jesus, on me)
Scraping these smiles of mine
Impossible one at a time
(Cry all your teardrops on me)
While I'm still myself your blankets covered me
Covered me while I was still asleep
Jesus is at my side
Wondering what he will find
(Shine on, sweet Jesus, on me)
Watching the water rise
I'm getting lost in the tide
(Cry all your teardrops on me)
While I'm still myself your blankets covered me
Covered me while I was still asleep

I don't think this song has the spiritual meaning that most people would find in a song with the lines "Jesus is at my side." It's more about individuality and expression and the struggle to protect both of them.
Great Lips song, no matter what you make of the lyrics.
Just my Ideas of what the song was saying to me.
“Waiting for my ride” we are on our own ride; Jesus is floating outside of our individual world trying to get our attention to realize the truth and follow him he’s “shining down” on us; but we are on “our own ride”. we’re “watching the water rise” things are getting pretty bad troubles are mounting time is running out, “cry all your tear drops on me” is the same as some of the things Jesus said about laying our troubles and burdens on him. “While I’m still myself” could refer to somebody who hasn’t had the opportunity to meet Jesus yet ”still asleep” and become a new person reborn in spirit; hence “still myself” doing what he wants sinning and not understanding ”still asleep” but who’s sins are covered by Grace; “your blankets covered me”.
On a side note it also speaks to me of the struggle of the journey that comes after when a person has accepted Jesus into their heart and have become a new person reborn in spirit; but are still struggling with the flesh, temptation, the ways of the world and the old self “still myself”, “your Blankets covered me”
Referring to my previous comment I just started listening to the flaming lips and came here to see the lyrics, I noticed a comment section and decided to put my ideas in here and after looking around the net a little more I found out he's Agnostic maybe leaning towards atheism.I just wrote what i felt the song was saying to me. Good song; I guess it could mean what you want to mean. He did say he wishes he could believe in god, maybe he's still asleep.
I actually sorta disagree with the previous comment, although I agree that it is a great song. The lyrics speaks to me as if Jesus is a human security-like blanket. God and Jesus cover and help the needy, or the "asleep." Although religion has caused alot of wars, it's also helped keep people in orginazation and partially out of chaos. It seems as if the Lips are not making fun of Jesus per-se, but moreso appreciating the way that he acts as a "blanket that covers me". -bacci
